Cause-specific Deaths

NOTE: We provide raw values for total number of deaths by cause. However, before using these values, cause-specific deaths should be adjusted for relative completeness and for the size of the ill-defined group (see documentation). Adjusted figures will be included in the web site at a future date, stay tuned.

Users should note that the data are organized in two different classifications:

  1. 19 groups of causes of death designed to offer a more detailed definition for use in countries of the Latin American and Caribbean region. Click here to access the data
  2. 13 groups of causes of death designed to make the grouping comparable to the one defined in Preston, S.H., Keyfitz, N. and Schoen, R., 1972. Causes of Deaths: Life Tables for National Populations. New York: Seminar Press (work in progress)

The user should refer to the definition of the two groupings and the correspondence of each group to items in the various International Classification of Diseases that were utilized during the period 1945-2012.

The diagram below shows the data availability for total number of cause-specific deaths by age-top coding, ICD classification, country and year from the WHO Mortality Database.
