Christine Schwartz

Professor of Sociology

Christine Schwartz is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an affiliate of the Center for Demography and Ecology, the Center for Demography of Health and Aging, and the Institute for Research on Poverty. She received her PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2006 and her bachelor’s degree from Reed College.

Her primary research interests are in social demography, family, and stratification. Much of her research focuses on the link between demographic change and social inequality. Her current research examines the relationship between changes in union formation and dissolution, assortative mating, and income inequality in the United States. A second line of research examines the consequences of the reversal of the gender gap in education for marriage patterns and outcomes.

Her work has appeared in leading journals including the American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, Demography, and Gender & Society.
