Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Phone: Personality

sh001rec-sh010re    Total scores and number of questions answered for the
                    Five-Factor Model of Personality Structure: extraversion,
                    openness, neuroticism, conscientiousness, and
                    agreeableness.

sh011re-sh020re     Individual questions for the personality scale.

In February 2008, summary scores with means imputed for missing components
were added. The original summary scores remain. The score with means imputed
is named the same as the original with the letter "i" added as the 8th 
character of the name. This new variable is only constructed if at least 
half of the components receive a valid response, else the new summary 
measure is set to missing. The mean is calculated from the respondent's 
valid responses to the questions for the respective summary measure.

NOTE:  Because the unfolding technique was used to ask these questions 
       (see flowchart for question format) there are a few cases where 
       someone initially answered agree or disagree but in the follow up
       question did not state an intensity of this dis/agreement.  In
       these cases, the response was coded as either "don't know" or
       "refused" depending on the respondent's answer.

NOTE:  The response category "neither agree nor disagree" is coded as 0
       for personality items.  In addition, the response category "neither
       agree nor disagree" is not counted as an answered question in the
       summary items and does not contribute a value to the summary scores
       (sh001rec-sh010rec).  This is different than the coding of similar
       categories in the XPSYB module.
