WLS Codebooks

Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.

Phone: Marriage

The variables for complete marital histories are primarily constructed
using variables from both 1977 and 1994 data. Please read the sources of
variables carefully!

If you want to use variables for number of children from current (1994)
marriage, these variables were created in one of two ways.

If the respondents remained in their 1977 marriage and they were
1977 respondents, we used the new information obtained in 1994 to
update the previous children's roster obtained in the 1977 survey,
by adding the number of biological and adopted children who were
born between the marriage start and end dates.

For all other 1994 respondents who answered the phone interview
(i.e., 1977 non-respondents and those not currently in the same
marriage at that reported in 1977), the data on number of children
was obtained solely in the 1994 survey. PLEASE NOTE that often
the answer to the question "How many biological or adopted children
did you have in this marriage?" does NOT match the numbers and
birthdays of children collected in the child roster.

For 1977 non-respondents who answered the MAIL SURVEY only,
the number of children could only be ascertained for the
current/last marriage. This was done by selecting the biological
and adopted children who were born between the marriage start and
     end dates.

sc001re-sc004ree: All 1994 respondents (N=5365)

Please read related appendices.

NOTE: This module includes the 661 siblings who responded to the mail only
questionnaire; in addition to the respondents of the 1993-94 sibling
phone survey. Variable names from the mail only survey are
proceeded by an "&" in the parenthesized list of variable
names included with the variable description.

NOTE: See APPENDIX C for Marriage Coding.

NOTE: See APPENDIX O - COR607, Century Months.

NOTE: See APPENDIX E for Occupation Coding and Variable Creation.

Note: A 1977 sibling respondent who was never married at the time of the 1977 interview, but
then married for the first time after 1977 and before the 1993/94 interview, was not asked
about characteristics of the first spouse, unless the sibling respondent was married only once
since 1977 and was still in that marriage at the time of the 1993/94 interview.

Sibling respondents who answered only the mail questionnaire were not asked for the
birthdate of any spouses; thus, the age of the first spouse is coded as Not Ascertained.

Wherever possible, information from the 1993/94 survey was used to calculate the age of the
sibling respondent's spouse before marriage (that is, if there is a discrepency between the
birthdate of the first spouse, and XAGEFSP, then the birthdate was used to calculate this
value.) Conversely, if there was nonresponse on the birthdate question, then XAGEFSP was used
to calculate the birthdate, if possible.

Note: For 1977 respondents who married for the first time before 1977, this variable refers to
the education of the spouse at the time the spouse married the sibling respondent, unless the
sibling respondent was married only once and was currently married at the time of the 1977
interview. In this case, this variable reflects the educational attainment of the spouse in
1977. For 1977 non-respondents, this variable refers to the first spouse's educational
attainment at the time of marriage.

Sibling respondents who answered only the mail questionnaire provided the educational
attainment of their first spouse at the time of marriage only if the sibling respondent had
been married only one time.

Note: In cases where the respondent indicated a current marital status of divorced, but the
last marriage ending in separation, we assume that the marriage ended in divorce.

In cases where the respondent was never married in 1977 and indicated that s/he was
currently married, but did not get married after 1977, we assumed one marriage occured (with
begin date of marriage unknown).

There is 1 case where the status is separation but the respondent has since married. Since we
do not know how the marriage ultimately ended we keep the separation data, as the respondent
was separated in 1977.

Note: Male sibling respondents were not asked about the number of children from the first
marriage in 1977. If these respondents were married more than once before their 1977
interview, we calculated the number of children in their first marriage either by: (1) subtracting the numbers of children from later marriages from the total number or children, or (2)
using information about the birthdates of children obtained in 1993/94 to obtain the number of
children born during the first marriage.

The number of adopted children was not ascertained for men in the 1977 interview, while it
was ascertained in the 1993 interview. This variable includes BOTH biological and adopted
children, while the 1977 variable (XFMNOCH) does not include adopted children. Thus, SC048REE
is often greater than XFMNOCH, even when the respondent had no more children after 1977.

Note: The number of adopted children was not ascertained in the 1977 interview, while it was
ascertained in the 1993 interview. This variable includes BOTH biological and adopted
children, while the 1977 variable (XLMNOCH) does not include adopted children. Thus, SC072REG
is often greater than XLMNOCH, even when the respondent had no more children after 1977.
