WLS Codebooks and Flowcharts

Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.

Phone: Cognition

The sibling respondents were asked to give answers to ten of the
fourteen items from the Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS).
These items were assigned scores between 0 and 2, unless the
interview was a partial and these questions were not asked.
If the questions were not asked, the code is 9.

The twenty-six 1992-93 graduates who are also siblings (sa005re=4) were
only asked seven of these ten WAIS items. The other three - si003re,
si005re and si008re are coded -3 for these twenty-six respondents.
SI001RE is coded -3 for these respondents.

See Appendix G, Cor572 for details about how the scores 0 - 2 were chosen.

si001re Sum of the scores for the cognition questions.
si002re In what way are an orange and a banana alike?
si003re In what way are a dog and a lion alike?
si004re In what way are an eye and an ear alike?
si005re In what way are north and west alike?
si006re In what way are an egg and a seed alike?
si007re In what way are a table and a chair alike?
si008re In what way are a poem and a status alike?
si009re In what way are work and play alike?
si010re In what way are a fly and a tree alike?
si011re In what way are praise and punishment alike?

All twenty-six 1992-93 original sample members who are also
siblings are coded -3. The total cognition score can rabnge from
0 (the lowest possible) to 20 (the highest possible).
