WLS Codebooks

Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.

Phone: Selected Child

During the 1975 interview one of the respondents children was randomly
chosen as the "selected" child. We intended to ask about this same child
if he/she were still alive during the 1992-1993 interview. However, due to
an error in the first version of the survey instrument, the "selected" child
was randomly chosen for groups 0 and 1 (GROUP91=0 or 1) for the nonsib sample
(XSTAT77=99). Of course this randomly chosen child was sometimes the same
child as the 1975 selected child and sometimes he/she was different. Variable
RDB02SK indicates if a new child was selected and the reason for the new
selection. Please note that RDB002SK contains the codes from RD002SK prior to
2004.

If the selected child was deceased, a new child was chosen in 1992. In order
to avoid confusion, in 2004, we agreed to follow the same selected child.

In 2004, the data file was restructured so that data for all selected children
who were newly chosen for any reason other than noninterview of R previously
are no longer available in the master data set. Data for these selected
child variables is available in a separate module - newchild92. 678 cases
are in newchild92.

Variable RDB02SK is coded 4 (new child chosen due to death of 1975
selected child), 5 (new child due to error in instrument) or 7 (2 cases,
random error) for cases whose data is only available in newchild92. Variables
RD002SK-RD016SK of KROS and all the variables in SKID (RJ001SK-RJ051SK)
have been moved to newchild92 for children newly selected in 92. Data in
the master file for these variables is coded not ascertained (-4) for the 678
cases if there is no information available from the 1975 or 1993 interview.

Seven respondents refused to reveal any information regarding children.
Thus we do not know whether or not they have any children. These cases are
coded 9 or 99 or 999 as appropriate for all questions in this section.

rj001sk Number of children selected child has.
rj002sk State of selected child's residence.

job. Summary occupation and industry, status scores
                      for current/last job.
rj040sk Were questions RJ041SK-RJ051SK in the random sample?
rj041sk-rj042sk Respondent's assistance to selected child with
                       finding a job.
rj043sk-rj046sk Respondent's frequency of contact with selected child.
rj047sk-rj048sk Similarity and closeness between respondent and
                       selected child.

Note: The 1990 Major Occupation categories are selected to resemble the 1970 categories, but
individual occupations which may have changed category between 1970 and 1990 (for example,
Actors & Directors) keep their 1990 major industry designation. No attempt was made to
reconcile these cases. The large number of such cases makes direct comparison between 1970 and
1990 Major Occupation categories unadvisable. For a list of all such individual changes, see
Kubitschek 1986 (CDE Working Paper 86-6).
Note: See Appendix E - cor681 for detailed coding instructions.
Note: Consistent with 1990 Census procedures, civilian occupation codes were assigned to
military personnel if they described civilian occupational activities. Therefore, it is
possible to assign a code for those individuals on this variable.

Individuals in the military who only described military occupations were assigned the military
