WLS Codebooks

Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.

Mail: Menopause

mn118rer Form Type: The WLS Mail Questionnaire page on women's
health was administered in two forms. While the first
version asked women to report on their feelings towards
their menopause, the second version asked for additional
information on reproductive organ surgery, hormone
                    therapy, alternative menopausal treatment and
                    information sources.

mn119rer-mn121rer These variables designate where female respondents are
                    in the menstrual/menopause process.

mn122rer-mn124rer These items cover reproductive organ surgery.
Information on timing and specific type of surgery is
only available for respondents who completed the second
version of the mail questionnaire (mn118rer = 2).

mn125rer-mn164rec Items on hormone therapy.

mn125rer-mn126rec, These items on ever-hormone "replacement"
mn164rec therapy, the start of hormone "replacement" therapy, and
current "replacement" therapy were asked directly or
indirectly of female respondents, depending on which
                    mail questionnaire version was completed.

mn127rer-mn163rec These variables from the second version
of the mail questionnaire cover the complete hormone
"replacement" therapy history reported by respondents.

mn127rer-mn145rec These are the essentially RAW variables on
hormone "replacement" therapy history. They have been
recoded chronologically into the next set of variables.

mn146rec-mn163rec These are the chronologically ordered "best"
variables on hormone "replacement" therapy history from
the second version of the mail questionnaire.

mn165rer-mn171rer These cover menopausal symptoms experienced by female
respondents. These items appeared on both versions of
                    the mail questionnaire.

mn172rer This is a screening item for whether any other
                    information on menopause was reported.

mn173rer-mn175rer These cover female respondents' reports of their
feelings about their menopause. These items appeared on
the first version of the mail questionnaire only
                    (mn118rer = 1).

mn176rer-mn182re These items appeared on the second version of the mail
                    questionnaire only (mn118rer = 2).

mn176rer Women report whether they had enough information about
                    their menopause.

mn177re-mn179re Three coded mentions of women's alternative
(i.e. non-medical) strategies for their menopause.

mn180re-mn182re Three coded mentions of women's sources of information
                    about menopause.
