WLS Codebooks

Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.

Phone: Marriage

rc001re-rc004re All 1993 respondents (N=8493)

rc005re-rc040re All respondents currently married in 1993. (N=6980)

rc041re-rc076re Complete marital history through the 1993 follow-up survey
using data from 1975 and 1993 sources.

The variables for complete marital histories are primarily constructed
using variables from both 1975 and 1993 data. Please read the sources of
      variables carefully!

If you want to use variables for number of children from current (1993)
marriage, these variables were created in one of two ways.

If the respondents remained in their 1975 marriage and they were
1975 respondents, we used the new information obtained in 1993 to
update the previous children's roster obtained in the 1975 survey.

            For all other 1993 respondents (i.e., 1975 non-respondents and
those not currently in the same marriage at that reported in 1975),
the data on number of children was obtained solely in the 1993
            survey.

      Please read related appendices.

rc041re-rc046re Complete history - First marriage
rc047re-rc052re Complete history - Second marriage
rc053re-rc058re Complete history - Third marriage
rc059re-rc064re Complete history - Fourth marriage
rc065re-rc070re Complete history - Fifth marriage
rc071re-rc076re Complete history - Sixth marriage

rc077re-rc082re Most recent marriage as of 1993.

Note: RC041RE - RC076RE provide a complete marital history through the 1992 follow-up survey
using data from 1975 and 1992 sources.

(1) The following variables for complete marital histories are primarily constructed using
variables from both 1975 and 1992 data. Please read the sources of variables carefully!

(2) If you want to use variables for number of children from current (1992) marriage, these
variables were created in one of two ways.

If the respondents remained in their 1975 marriage and they were 1975 respondents, we used the
new information obtained in 1992 to update the previous children's roster obtained in the 1975
survey.

For all other 1992 respondents (i.e., 1975 non- respondents and those not currently in the same
marriage at that reported in 1975), the data on number of children was obtained solely in the
1992 survey.

Please read Appendix C COR515A, COR429A. MEMO116A, COR474A,
and COR514 - Marriage.
