WLS Codebooks
Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.
Phone: Cognition
The respondents were asked to give answers to eight of the fourteen items from the Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). The simpliest items from the WAIS were eliminated due to the fact that the general ability of the sample is high enough to cause little variation in response to simple items. The eight items were assigned scores between 0 and 2, unless the interview was a useable partial that was terminated before or during the cognition questions. Any cognition question that was not asked due to partialling out is coded -3. See Appendix G, COR458 for details about how the scores 0 - 2 were chosen for the primary sample. ri001re Sum of the scores for the cognition questions. ri002re In what way are an orange and a banana alike? ri003re In what way are a table and a chair alike? ri004re In what way are an eye and an ear alike? ri005re In what way are an egg and a seed alike? ri006re In what way are air and water alike? ri007re In what way are work and play alike? ri008re In what way are a fly and a tree alike? ri009re In what way are praise and punishment alike?

If at least one individual score is -3, then RI001RE is -3. The total cognition score can range from 0 (the lowest possible) to 16 (the highest possible).
See Appendix G, COR458 for details about how the scores 0 - 2 were chosen for the primary sample.
