WLS Codebooks
Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.
Phone: End of Life Preparations
HEOLPREP -- End of Life Preparations Module Graduate-Spouse Instrument, Phone For more information on the End of Life Preparations module see Appendix U. OVERVIEW With some minor exceptions (listed in the next paragraph), the graduate-spouse version of the End of Life Preparations module is exactly like the graduate version. Thus, please read the COR for the graduate module (cor854EOLPrepGradPhone.doc) for information about sampling, coding, and problems experienced in preparing this module. The only differences between the graduate and graduate-spouse versions of this module are that 1) grad-spouse variables begin with 'a' instead of 'g'; 2) grad-spouses don't have variables ay140re, ay063sp, ay064sp, or ay066sp (based on raw variables wep1aa/wpe1ba, wpi1a, wpi2, and wpi4, respectively); 3) grad-spouses don't have the 6 pattern variables -- ay116rec, ay118rec, ay120rec, ay125rec, ay126rec, and ay146rec -- which indicate which child in the child roster received a given end-of-life instruction. (This is because, due to remarriages, the spouse's children may be different than the grad's children, and thus sometimes don't appear in the child roster at all); 4) grad-spouses were explicitly asked whether they have lived in the Wiscville area in the past 10 years (see next paragraph). The EOL questions were administered to a randomly selected 70% subsample to reduce the overall length of the survey. However, all graduate-spouses who were Wiscville residents were asked these questions, because, in the mid-1990s, major health care organizations in this area implemented a large-scale advance directive education program. Grad-spouses were considered to be in the Wiscville sample if they lived in the Wiscville area 1) at the time of the 1992-93 survey, 2) when tracked for 2003-2005 survey, and/or 3) at the time of the 2003-2005 interview; or if 4) they reported that they had lived in the Wiscville area at some point in the last 10 years (in response to questions wpa2 or wpa2a in this module). BRIEF VARIABLE DESCRIPTIONS ay001re: Wiscville resident flag (100% of Wiscville residents will get this module). ay002re: EOLFLAG for sample selection (70% of respondents will get this module, except for Wiscville residents, who are sampled at 100%, as mentioned). ay003re: Has R made *any* preparations for end of life? (I.e., positive response to at least one of ay004re, ay010re, ay020re, and ay030re.) ay004re: Has R made medical plans in case of future serious illness? ay010re-ay021re: R's discussion of health care plans and preferences (With anyone? Spouse? Kids? Whom? How well does person understand?). ay022re-ay026re: Legal arrangements for someone to make decisions about R's medical care (Any? Who has, or would have, that authority? Spouse? Kids?). ay030re-ay038re: R's living will or advance directive (Exists? Given to spouse? To kids? To whom?). ay040re-ay046re: Inheritance plans (Who would get R's assets? Does R have will? Etc.). ay060re-ay062re: R's hopes/plans for last days or weeks of life (Where spent? Discontinue treatments?). ay065re: How strictly to follow R's wishes for end of life medical care. ay070rec: At what stage in the Terri Schiavo case did R complete the WLS phone survey?

This variable is set to 2 "NO" if none of the people mentioned in AY034RE through AY038RE is a child. It is set to -2 "INAPPROPRIATE" if any of the five constituent variables is -1 or -3, or if this question doesn't apply because R is not in the End-of-Life sample or R hasn't given the living will to anyone. In rare cases, respondents who according to our records are childless may nonetheless name a child. These cases are retained.
NOTE also that due to instrument error, some cases of -3 "refusal" in AY034RE through AY038RE may have been lost (and coded as -2). Thus, there may be a small number of cases in which this variable (AY033REC) will be set to 2 "NO" when it should in fact be set to -2 "INAPPROPRIATE".
