WLS Codebooks

Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.

URELI - Religion Module Sibling-Spouse Phone Instrument

OVERVIEW

The religion section for the 2005 - 2007 interview of spouses of the WLS
siblings asks only one question. This question asks about frequency of
attendance at religious services in the last year. Answers are accepted at
the unit of day, week, month or year and converted into the total number of
times per year. Religious preference of the spouses is not measured here
because it was collected in the 2005 sibling instrument.

BRIEF VARIABLE DESCRIPTIONS

bl101re - Indicates if SSR is in 80% religion sample

bl002rec - Raw numeric component for frequency of SSR's religious attendance
             in past year

bl003red - Units to go with numeric component for frequency of SSR's
             religious attendance

bl004rec - Frequency of SSR's religious attendance converted from raw numeric
component and units to total times in the past year

Note: This variable is only appropriate if the respondent gave a positive numeric value for church
attendance. It wouldn't make sense to give the units for don't know, refused, or zero attendance.

bl004rec: Frequency of religious attendance converted to total times in the past year.

Data source: Sibling Spouse Respondent      Collected in: 2005      Mode: phone

11 Approximately Once A Day Or More (321-730 Times Per Year) 6 10 16
Note: This variable was constructed from the previous two. A don't know or refused in BL002REC leads
to an inap value here, even though refusing or not knowing one of the components of a constructed
variable could imply refusing or not knowing the variable itself. An inap in BL003RED does not always
imply a missing value in 004. 003 could have been skipped because 002 was zero, but this still leads
to a meaningful value (zero) for attendance.
