WLS Codebooks
Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.
Phone: End of Life Preparations
SEOLPREP End of Life Preparations Module OVERVIEW With some minor exceptions (listed in the next paragraph), the sibling version of the End of Life Preparations module is exactly like the graduate version. Thus, please read the COR for the graduate module (cor854EOLPrepGradPhone.doc) for information about sampling, coding, and problems experienced in preparing this module. The only differences between the graduate and sibling versions of this module are that: 1) sibling variables begin with 'c' instead of 'g'; 2) siblings don't have the 6 pattern variables -- named gy116rec, gy118rec, gy120rec, gy125rec, gy126rec, and gy146rec in the grad module -- which indicate which child in the child roster received a given end-of-life instruction; 3) for siblings, variables cy016re, cy018re, cy020re, cy025re, cy026re, and cy034re through cy038re are based on raw variables (wpa4a, wpa4d, wpa4g, wpb2, wpb3, and wpc1_a through _e) that have slightly different answer categories here than in the grad or grad- spouse versions. Specifically, the "CHILD/CHILD-IN-LAW/GRANDCHILD" category was replaced with 6 separate categories in the sibling instrument: DAUGHTER, SON, DAUGHTER-IN-LAW, SON-IN-LAW, GRANDDAUGHTER, and GRANDSON. The difference between sibling and other versions is, ultimately, relatively minor, since open-ended coding was used to identify sons, daughters, etc. in a large proportion of cases for grads and grad-spouses. But for siblings, unlike grads or grad-spouses, the catch-all category "CHILD/CHILD-IN-LAW/GRANDCHILD" is completely eliminated. The EOL questions were administered to a randomly selected 70% subsample to reduce the overall length of the survey. However, all siblings who were Wiscville residents were asked these questions, because, in the mid-1990s, major health care organizations in this area implemented a large-scale advance directive education program. Siblings were considered to be in the Wiscville sample if they lived in the Wiscville area 1) at the time of the 1993-1994 survey or 2) at the time of the 2003-2005 survey. BRIEF VARIABLE DESCRIPTIONS cy001re: Wiscville resident flag (100% of Wiscville residents will get this module). cy002re: EOLFLAG for sample selection (70% of respondents will get this module, except for Wiscville residents, who are sampled at 100%, as mentioned). cy003re: Has Sibling respondent made *any* preparations for end of life? (i.e., positive response to at least one of cy004re, cy010re, cy020re, and cy030re.) cy004re: Has Sibling respondent made medical plans in case of future serious illness? cy010re-cy021re: Sibling respondent's discussion of health care plans and preferences (With anyone? Spouse? Kids? Whom? How well does person understand?). cy022re-cy026re: Legal arrangements for someone to make decisions about Sibling respondent's medical care (Any? Who has, or would have, that authority? Spouse? Kids?). cy030re-cy038re: Sibling respondent's living will or advance directive (Exists? Given to spouse? To kids? To whom?). cy040re-cy046re: Inheritance plans (Who would get Sibling respondent's assets? Does Sibling respondent have will? Etc.). cy060re-cy062re: Sibling respondent's hopes/plans for last days or weeks of life (Where spent? Discontinue treatments?). cy065re: How strictly to follow Sibling respondent's wishes for end of life medical care. cy070rec: At what stage in the Terri Schiavo case did Sibling respondent complete the WLS phone survey? Note: See Cor 929 in Appendix U for variable creation details

This variable is set to "no" if none of the people mentioned in CY016RE, CY018RE, and CY020RE is a child. It is set to -2 "INAPPROPRIATE" if any of the three constituent variables is -1 or -3, or if this question doesn't apply because R is not in the End-of-Life sample or didn't discuss health care plans with anyone. In rare cases, respondents who according to our records are childless may nonetheless name a child. These cases are retained.

This variable is set to 2 "NO" if none of the people mentioned in CY034RE through CY038RE is a child. It is set to -2 "INAPPROPRIATE" if any of the five constituent variables is -1 or -3, or if this question doesn't apply because R is not in the End-of-Life sample or R hasn't given the living will to anyone. In rare cases, respondents who according to our records are childless may nonetheless name a child. These cases are retained.
NOTE also that due to instrument error, some cases of -3 "refusal" in CY034RE through CY038RE may have been lost (and coded as -2). Thus, there may be a small number of cases in which this variable (CY033REC) will be set to 2 "NO" when it should in fact be set to -2 "INAPPROPRIATE".
