WLS Codebooks

Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.

SEDUC Education Module

OVERVIEW

Information about the Sibling Respondent's education was collected in the
following manner:

-Whether respondents were born in Wisconsin was ascertained. If birth
date information was missing for a given respondent, that information was
ascertained as well.

-Information on primary and post-secondary education was collected in this
module. Whether the respondent attended primary school in Wisconsin and the
name and location of Wisconsin primary schools attended the longest by the
respondent were collected. The same data was collected about junior high school
if IQ data for the sibling respondent was missing. Whether the respondent had
taken any courses for credit at a two or four-year college and whether the
respondent had attained a degree since the last time they had been interviewed
for the study was collected as well. If the respondent reported having
attained a degree since the last interview, information about this degree was
collected. Respondents who reported having taken classes and/or attaining a
degree since the last interview were asked whether they were currently
enrolled at a two or four-year college.

-Success questions are actually asked at the end of the interview.
Following the 1993 codebook, they are put here.

BRIEF VARIABLE DESCRIPTIONS

CB001RE-CB009RED: Summary of Educational History Using Data Collected in
                        1977,1993 and 2004.

CB010RE, CB012REC: Update of the Educational History from the Time of the
Last Interview with the Respondent Using 2004 Data

be Replicated with 2004 Data. Prior to release 12.30,
data from the 1975 graduate interview was mistakenly
carried forward for cases that did not have valid
data from 1993/2004 sibling interviews. The original
variable, CB016RED, has since been archived. CB116RED
                        is the corrected version.

                        data.
                        *Note: SB018RED, SB019RED and SB021RED from 1993 Data

original variable, CB020RED, has since been archived.
                        CB120RED is the corrected version.

Note: cb122red replicates sb022red in part. In 1993 information about courses and degrees was obtained in detail through a loop. The looping technique made the respective timing of the courses and the degrees clear for the purposes of the sb022red question. In 2004 the questions are only asked once and relative timing is not ascertained. In 2004 the precedence of the degree to the courses taken can only be established for rs who reported a degree by 1993 and no new degree since and also reported taking courses since 1993.

Therefore, we cannot construct intermediate categories such as 13 (one year of college) and major field of degree for respondents who earned a higher degree. We must make assumptions concerning how long it took for a respondent to obtain a new degree when constructing CB103RED. Use CB012REC to isolate respondents for whom these assumptions were made in calculating CB103RED.
