Overview

Cognition - TICSm

TICSm (Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status - modified) is used for the
first time in the ILIAD wave of WLS. TICSm is a validated measures to assess
risk of dementia via a 
telephone inteview. 

For purposes of selection into the longer more intensive interview we make two
adjustments to participant's summary score (q1i915re). 

First we adjust for their educational history. We subtract two points from
their total score if they have any education beyond high school; we add two
points if they completed 8-11 years of formal schooling; we add five points if
they have fewer than 8 years of formal schooling.

Second we subtract one point from the total score if they have earlier evidence
of cognitive decline (q1i913re=1). We created this decline measure from 4
components: Immediate and Delayed Recall, Letter Fluency and Digit Ordering.
The adjustment (q1i913re) was set to 1 for the 10 percent of the sample that
showed the largest decline between 2004 and 2011.

Any participant whose adjusted score is below 29 was invited to participate in
our longer interview.

Researchers should use the provided summary score without adjustments
(q1i915re) in their models.
