GALC Alcohol Module

OVERVIEW

In the 2004 wave, the questions regarding alcohol use/ experiences became an
independent module, but it is very similar to the alcohol questions in the last
wave of data collection in 1993. This current wave replicated the all of the
questions that were in the previous one and added four new questions from the
M.I.N.I. PLUS 5.0.0 which became variables GU039RE, GU040RE, GU041RE, and
GU042RE.

A core set of questions was asked of all respondents whether or not they were
included in the sub-sample. These questions relate to the drinking habits of
respondents (variables GU025RE GU026RE GU027RE GU028RE GU029RE) and if they had
ever lived with an alcoholic (variables GU037RE GU038RE).

Further questions about alcoholic symptoms and attitudes about alcohol use are
based on the same 79% random sub-sample of respondents as it was in 1993.
Variable GUA01RE is identical to GU001RE in the Depression module and is a flag
which equals 1 if respondents were in the sample and 0 if they were not.

BRIEF VARIABLE DESCRIPTIONS

GUA01RE: Random Sub-Sample Selection Flag (ALCFLAG)

    GU025RE - GU029RE: Alcohol Use in a Typical Month

    GU030RE - GU036RE: Selected Alcohol Symptoms from the G-Mast

GU037RE - GU038RE: Has Respondent Ever Lived with a Problem
                                Drinker

    GU039RE - GU042RE: Lifetime Alcohol Symptoms from the M.I.N.I
                                Plus 5.0.0

Note: See COR 849 in Appendix M for variable creation details
