In Person: Vision Screener

KVIS Vision Screener Module

OVERVIEW

The Vision Screener Module, which was administered to a randomly selected 15%
sub-sample of participants, is new to the 2010 collection wave. It features a
check of participants' vision using an 11-line Snellen chart much like those
preferred by eye care professionals. Each line on the chart includes different
combinations of letters. Moreover, with each descending line, the number of
letters increases as their (font) size decreases. The vision check is
administered as follows: first, the interviewer sets up an easel; then, the
interviewer places the participant's chair 10 feet away from the easel and
directly facing it; the participant is subsequently invited to sit down in the
chair, after which the Snellen chart is placed on the easel; finally, the
interviewer instructs the participant to "please look at this chart and read
the lowest complete line you can see. While you are doing this activity, please
try to keep your back against the back of the chair [if the chair does not have
a back the participant is asked to sit up as straight as they can]." If the
participant is unable to correctly read the complete line they select, the
interviewer asks them to "please read the line above that one." Conversely, if
the participant correctly reads the complete line they select, the interviewer
encourages them to try reading the line below it. The interviewer continues
prompting the participant to read adjacent lines until the lowest one they can
correctly read is determined. Note that this module was only administered to
members of the sub-sample who were interviewed in person, did not report an
inability to see when asked about their vision in the Health Module, and who
had the use of their hands (the vision check preceded a cognitive task that
involved using a computer keyboard).

Note: For many cases a participant's spouse or other family member was present during the interview. This sometimes resulted in the participant relying on the other person for help in answering some or many of the questions. At the end of each module the interviewer indicated the amount of help the participant received and who provided that help. That assessment is covered by codes 1 through 5. Additionally, a code of 7 indicates that the entire interview was administered to a proxy while a code of 6 indicates that this particular module was answered by a proxy but other modules were answered by the participant.

Note: If this module was administered via proxy or if the participant received help answering the questions in this module then we record the relationship of the proxy/helper to the participant. Although most participants relied on only one helper or proxy for the interview, some had more than one. Thus the value of the relationship code may vary across the modules.
