Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. In Person: Parents

KPAR Parent Module    

OVERVIEW

The parents module updates information on the participant's parent(s).
    
For all cases we update missing information such as date of birth, date of
death, parent's nationality, and cause of death.  
     
For parents who were alive at the time of last interview we update mortaility
status.  
     
If a parent has since died we ask about date and cause of death.  

Analysis variables for this round carry forward information collected in prior
waves. For example, reports of parents dates and cause of death ascertained in
prior waves are inserted into analysis variables created for this wave.

If a parent is still alive we ask about health, living situation, and frequency
of contact with the participant.  We also ask about closeness and whether the
participant and parent share a similar outlook on life.  In previous waves
questions on closesness and outlook on life were only asked of a 50% sample,
but in this wave they are asked about all surviving parents.    
     
Comparison questions regarding work, finances, and family were not asked in the
2011 wave.  
     
If the participant was currently married or partnered then we asked the
mortality status of the participant's father and/or mother-in-law.
