Mail: Health Insurance Coverage

Sibling Mail: Health Insurance Coverage Module

OVERVIEW

Although new to the 2011 mail survey, the Health Insurance Coverage section is
similar in scope to the Access to Health Care and Insurance Module of the 2005
telephone interview. The mail questionnaire begins by determining all types of
health insurance the participant and their spouse - if applicable - are
currently covered under. These types can be organized into three categories:
(1) government or public health insurance that covers hospital costs or the
costs of visits to the doctor; (2) private health insurance that works with,
supplements, or replaces Medicare coverage to cover hospital costs or the costs
of visits to the doctor; and (3) private health insurance that does not
supplement or replace Medicare coverage to cover hospital costs or the costs of
visits to the doctor. Next, the questionnaire determines whether the
participant and/or their spouse are covered by any prescription drug insurance
plans. Here, coverage under the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan is given
particular emphasis. If the participant is enrolled in a Medicare Part D
prescription drug plan, they are asked how much - if anything - they pay in
premiums for it, how they selected their particular plan, how important various
factors were in their selection of it, and their satisfaction with and
confidence in it. If the participant is not enrolled in a Medicare Part D
prescription drug plan, they are asked about their reasons for not signing up.
The questionnaire concludes by asking a series of questions about long-term
care insurance initially introduced during the Health Behaviors section of the
2005 mail survey.

For the sake of comparison, see also the 2005 CATI administered Access to
Health Care and Insurance Module.
