In Person: Job Characteristics

KJOBC Job Characteristics Module

OVERVIEW

The 2011 Job Characteristics Module generally replicates its predecessor from
the 2005 collection wave. As in 2005, one of the job spells reported by the
participant during the Employment Module was selected as the subject of further
interviewing related to wages and job details (e.g. authority level, reactions
to work, computer use, the organization of labor, and perceptions of job
security). The following criteria were used to select a spell: if the
participant reported a retirement since last being interviewed (2005 for the
great majority of them and 1994 for those who did not participate in 2005), the
first spell they retired from was selected; if the participant had not retired
since last being interviewed but was currently employed, the current spell they
started first was selected; finally, if the participant had not retired since
last being interviewed and was not currently employed, their most recently
completed spell was selected. The Job Characteristics Module was skipped if the
participant had not worked in a valid employer spell since last being
interviewed or if the characteristics of a job that ended in retirement were
previously recorded in 2005. Notably, while questions about job details were
only asked to a randomly selected 75% sub-sample in 2005, they were asked to
all participants who were eligible for the module in 2011.

For information about the nature of the Job Characteristics Module and our
employment data at prior collection waves, please see Appendices E and F (CORs
582, 850, and 958). No new documentation about job characteristics data was
added to the appendices for the 2011 collection wave.

Note: For many cases a participant's spouse or other family member was present during the interview. This sometimes resulted in the participant relying on the other person for help in answering some or many of the questions. At the end of each module the interviewer indicated the amount of help the participant received and who provided that help. That assessment is covered by codes 1 through 5. Additionally, a code of 7 indicates that the entire interview was administered to a proxy while a code of 6 indicates that this particular module was answered by a proxy but other modules were answered by the participant.

Note: If this module was administered via proxy or if the participant received help answering the questions in this module then the interviewer recorded the relationship of the proxy/helper to the participant. Although most participants relied on only one helper or proxy for the interview, some had more than one. Thus the value of the relationship code may vary across the modules.

If the Job Characteristics Module was administered about a spell that was, upon review, deemed invalid and deleted from the job roster (see Employment Module), the participant was assigned a value of "4" on this variable.

On a scale from zero to ten, what chance do you think there is that you will lose your job completely in the next two years? On this scale, zero means that there is absolutely no chance that you will lose your job completely, and ten means that you are certain that you will lose your job completely in the next two years." In helping participants answer the question, interviewers were additionally instructed that "the idea here is a possible involuntary loss of the job. If the participant already plans to leave voluntarily, ask them to try to respond about the chances of an involuntary loss of the job if they did not plan to leave.
