In Person: End of Life Death Reactions

KEOLDTH End of Life Death Reactions Module

OVERVIEW

The End of Life Death Reactions Module focuses on the participant's experiences
of spousal and parental death. It was first introduced as part of the 2005
telephone interview and has been almost exactly replicated for the 2010
collection wave. Data were collected in the following manner:

If the participant has experienced a spousal death since they were last
interviewed - whether that was during the 1994 or 2005 collection wave
     - they will be asked a series of questions about the context of their
spouse's death, including how much pain he/she was in during the last
week of life, how prominently a Durable Power of Attorney for Health
Care appointment or signed living will factored into his/her last week
of life, and the extent to which his/her stated wishes for end of life
care were followed. These are followed up with questions about if and
how the death of the participant's spouse changed their health insurance
coverage or financial situation (through a life insurance settlement,
alteration in the compensation paid out by a pension or annuity, and so
forth). Participants who have experienced multiple spousal deaths since
last being interviewed will be asked to focus on the spouse who died
most recently. If the participant has not experienced a spousal death
since they were last interviewed, but reports a previously unrecorded
spousal death that occurred within the 10 years prior to their 2010
interview date, the same sequence of questions will be administered. In
these situations, the spousal death will have occurred before the
     participant's last interview.

If, on the other hand, the participant was interviewed during the 2005
collection wave, has not experienced a spousal death since then, but has
experienced a parental death, they will be asked about the context of
their parent's death. The questions asked replicate those used to
capture experiences of spousal death, with the exception of questions
focusing on changes in health insurance coverage and finances, which are
omitted. If the participant was not interviewed during the 2005
collection wave, the same sequence of questions will be administered if
they have experienced a parental - but not spousal - death in the past
10 years. If the participant's mother and father have both died since
they were interviewed in 2005, or within the past 10 years, they will be
asked to focus on their father's death.

Note that, if a participant has experienced both a spousal and parental death
since last being interviewed, they will only be asked about the death of their
spouse. Questions about parental death - if applicable - are only asked when
the participant has not also experienced a spousal death. The 2010 version of
the End of Life Death Reactions Module differs from its 2005 predecessor in
four major ways. First, a series of questions about the participant's
behavioral and emotional reactions to recent spousal deaths (those occurring
within the 2 years prior to their interview) has been removed. Second, several
questions about the participant's experiences of parental death have been
added. Specifically, these address providing care for a parent at the end of
life, their end of life levels of emotional distress, and the participant's
perceptions of whether their parent experienced a "good death". Third, if a
participant has experienced a spousal or parental death in the past 6 months,
we no longer refrain from asking them the end of life death reactions questions
(as was the case during the 2005 collection wave). Fourth and finally, we no
longer only focus on spousal deaths that have occurred within the 10 years
prior to the participant's interview. For participant's who were not
interviewed during the 2005 collection wave, questions will be asked about
spousal deaths occurring as far back as 1992 (the first year in which
interviews were conducted for the 1994 collection wave).

See cor853 in Appendix U for variable creation details.

Note: For many cases a participant's spouse or other family member was present during the interview. This sometimes resulted in the participant relying on the other person for help in answering some or many of the questions. At the end of each module the interviewer indicated the amount of help the participant received and who provided that help. That assessment is covered by codes 1 through 5. Additionally, a code of 7 indicates that the entire interview was administered to a proxy while a code of 6 indicates that this particular module was answered by a proxy but other modules were answered by the participant.

Note: If this module was administered via proxy or if the participant received help answering the questions in this module then we record the relationship of the proxy/helper to the participant. Although most participants relied on only one helper or proxy for the interview, some had more than one. Thus the value of the relationship code may vary across the modules.

Note: The End of Life Death Reactions module is only administered to participants for whom one of the following conditions is met: (1) they have experienced a spousal death since they were last interviewed (whether that was during the 1994 or 2005 collection wave); (2) they have not experienced a spousal death since last being interviewed, but reported a previously unrecorded spousal death that occurred within the 10 years prior to their 2010 interview; (3) they have experienced a parental death since being interviewed during the 2005 collection wave OR within the past 10 years for participants who weren't interviewed in 2005. Participants who do not satisfy any of these conditions have been assigned a value of "-2" on KY201REC, signifying inappropriate. If the participant experienced both a parental and spousal death within one of the applicable time frames, they are only asked questions about their experiences related to the spousal death. If multiple spousal deaths were experienced, the most recent will be selected as the subject for questioning. If no spousal deaths were experienced, but both of the participant's parents died within an applicable time frame, their father's death will be selected as the subject for questioning. Otherwise, if no spousal deaths and only one parental death occurred, the lone parental death will be selected as the subject for questioning.
Note: During the 2005 collection wave, differential questions about the participant's experiences of spousal and parental death were administered depending on how much time had elapsed between the death in question and the participant's interview. As a result, this variable's 2005 predecessor, CY201REC, included such categories as "spouse's death between 6 months and 2 years" and "spouse's death between 2 years and 10 years." Moreover, no questions were asked about parental or spousal deaths that had occurred within the 6 months preceding the participant's interview date. For the 2010 collection wave, this restriction has been removed; all deaths occurring since the participant's last interview or within the past 10 years are now treated as valid subjects for interviewing. Further, we have eliminated a set of questions asked only to participants whose spouses had died less than 2 years, but more than 6 months, prior to their interview. Because the same series of questions are now asked about all spousal deaths, the details on when a death occurred relative to the participant's interview date have been removed from KY201REC's value labels.
Note: During the 2005 collection wave, variables were constructed indicating whether the participant's mother or father had died within the 10 years preceding their interview date (see CY204REC and CY205REC). These have not been constructed for the 2010 collection wave. See the 2010 Parents Module for information on the mortality status of the participant's parents and the timing of their deaths, if applicable.

ky202rec: Spouse roster ID number of decedent Participant is being interviewed about.

-5 PARTIAL INTERVIEW 3 1 4
-2 1561 1587 3148
201 56 165 221
202 2 0 2
Note: If the participant is being interviewed about a spouse's death (see KY201REC), that spouse's roster ID number is the subject of KY202REC and can be used to link all variables asked about them in this module with other data collected specifically about them. If the participant is not being interviewed about a spousal death, KY202REC has been assigned a value of "-2," signifying inappropriate.
Note: This variable's predecessor from the 2005 collection wave (see CY202REC) was titled "was the deceased your first or second spouse?" Although KY202REC has a different title for the 2010 collection wave, it still contains the same information as CY202REC. This can be observed by noting that the last digit of a spouse's roster ID number indexes its chronological position - from earliest to most recent - among the marriages and/or cohabiting partnerships the participant has ever reported being in. Thus, if the roster ID number ends with a "1," it represents the first marriage the participant ever reported being in (their first spouse). Likewise, if it ends in "3," it represents the third marriage the participant ever reported being in (their third spouse), and so forth.

Note: Here, century-months represent the number of Gregorian calendar months elapsed between when the decedent (the person whose death the participant is being interviewed about) died and when the participant was interviewed for the 2010 collection wave. If the participant hasn't experienced a parental or spousal death since last being interviewed or within the past 10 years (see KY201REC for information on how these time frames are applied), KY700REC has a value of "-2," signifying inappropriate.
Note: The 2005 End of Life Death Reactions module featured separate variables for the timing of spousal versus parental deaths relative to interview dates (see CY203REC and CY207REC, respectively). This distinction is no longer made. Instead, KY700REC provides information on the timing of both spousal and parental deaths relative to the participant's 2010 interview. Data users can rely on KY201REC to distinguish between spousal and parental deaths at KY700REC.
