In Person: Abbreviated Diabetes Knowledge Test (DKT)

KDIAB Abbreviated Diabetes Knowledge Test (DKT) Module

OVERVIEW

The Abbreviated Diabetes Knowledge Test Module is new to the 2011 collection
wave. At its core are selected questions from the 23-item "Diabetes Knowledge
Test (DKT)," which assesses general knowledge about diabetes using a multiple
choice format. The first fourteen items of the DKT can be appropriately
administered to both diabetics and non-diabetics, while the subsequent nine
items should only be administered to diabetics who use insulin. Within the
context of the CAPI interview, seven DKT items appropriate for both diabetics
and non-diabetics were asked to a randomly selected 15% sub-sample of
participants, as well as all participants who - in the Health Module - reported
ever having been diagnosed with diabetes. DKT items selected for inclusion in
this module addressed the following: the nutritional value of various foods
relative to others; measurement of blood glucose levels, as well as their
sensitivity to different foods; and risk factors and complications associated
with diabetes. For more information about the unabridged Diabetes Knowledge
Test, please see http://www.med.umich.edu/mdrtc/profs/survey.html#dkt.

4 R RECEIVED A LOT OF HELP 3 0 3
Note: For many cases a participant's spouse or other family member was present during the interview. This sometimes resulted in the participant relying on the other person for help in answering some or many of the questions. At the end of each module the interviewer indicated the amount of help the participant received and who provided that help. That assessment is covered by codes 1 through 5. Additionally, a code of 7 indicates that the entire interview was administered to a proxy while a code of 6 indicates that this particular module was answered by a proxy but other modules were answered by the participant.

Note: If this module was administered via proxy or if the participant received help answering the questions in this module then we record the relationship of the proxy/helper to the participant. Although most participants relied on only one helper or proxy for the interview, some had more than one. Thus the value of the relationship code may vary across the modules.

3 ELIGIBLE, NOT IN 15% SUB-SAMPLE BUT REPORTED DIABETES DIAGNOSIS 264 194 458
4 NOT ELIGIBLE 1107 1320 2427
Note: Participants were eligible to be assessed using the abbreviated DKT if they reported being diagnosed as a diabetic (see KX342RE in the Health Module) or if they belonged to the random 15% sub-sample selected to be tested regardless of whether they reported such a diagnosis. Although the abbreviated DKT should have been administered to all eligible participants, interviewing errors may - in rare cases - have resulted in it being skipped.
Note: The following preface was used to introduce the abbreviated DKT to participants who did not report a diabetes diagnosis (code "1"): "Next we are going to ask some questions about information that is especially relevant for people with diabetes. Even though you said you did not have diabetes, it is important for us to ask these questions to some people without diabetes so we are able to compare answers." For participants who did report a diabetes diagnosis (codes "2" and "3"), the preface was simplified to read, "Next we are going to ask some questions about information related to diabetes."

An eligible participant who was asked all seven DKT items was deemed not to have attempted a question if, rather than guessing at the answer, they indicated they did not know or refused to provide a response. For the number of questions answered correctly among participants who attempted all seven abbreviated DKT items, see KX572RE; for the number of questions answered correctly among participants who were asked all seven items (regardless of whether all items were attempted or not), see KX573RE.
