In Person: Anesthesia History

KANESTH  Anesthesia History Module

OVERVIEW

The Anesthesia History Module is new to the 2011 collection wave and addresses
surgeries or medical procedures the participant has received that required
anesthesia. Information was collected from selected participants as follows:
     
     All participants who - in the Health Module - reported ever undergoing 
     heart surgery were asked to specify the timing and type of their most 
     recent procedure; then, they were asked about their interest in being 
     contacted for future study of how procedures involving anesthesia may
     affect later health. If the participant did not report having ever 
     received heart surgery but belonged to a randomly selected 25% 
     sub-sample, they were asked about the timing and type of their three
     most recent medical procedures that required anesthesia, as applicable.
     Like peers who reported undergoing heart surgery, participants who 
     reported having other surgeries that required anesthesia were also 
     asked about their interest in being contacted for future study.
     
Users should note that no attempt was made to code participants' responses to
questions about medical procedure type; we will, however, make their answers
available upon request.

Note: For many cases a participant's spouse or other family member was present during the interview. This sometimes resulted in the participant relying on the other person for help in answering some or many of the questions. At the end of each module the interviewer indicated the amount of help the participant received and who provided that help. That assessment is covered by codes 1 through 5. Additionally, a code of 7 indicates that the entire interview was administered to a proxy while a code of 6 indicates that this particular module was answered by a proxy but other modules were answered by the participant.

Note: Participants were asked about their willingness to be contacted for future study if they reported having undergone heart surgery when asked in the Health Module (see KX355RE) or reported having undergone some other medical procedure that required anesthesia in the Anesthesia History Module (see KX587RE). When being asked about their willingness to be contacted, participants were informed that not all people who say "yes" would be contacted to participate and that it would most likely be a few years before any contact was made; they were also told that those who are contacted would be formally invited to participate and still have the right to refuse at that time
