WLS Codebooks

Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.

In Person: Cognition - Number Series Task

JMCARDLE Cognition - Number Series Task

OVERVIEW

The McArdle & Woodcock number series task measures induction and reasoning
ability with particular emphasis on quantitative reasoning. Each item consisted
of a series of numbers (e.g., 23, 26, 30, 35, __) and participants were asked
to identify the number that correctly completed the series. There are 15
different questions but each participant was only asked to answer six of them.
All participants saw the same three items in the first block of questions. The
number of items answered correctly determined the difficulty of the three items
in a second block. Thus, each participant completed six items in total and a
score was calculated based on which second block was completed and how many
answers were correct in each block. No time restriction was provided for this
task.

Participants who refused the entire module before they were asked the first
number series, have code -3 in the variable HI615RE. They also get the code -3
for each of the 15 individual questions (HI600RE - HI614RE). People who
refused the module after they heard at least one of the questions are coded -10
for the first question in which they refused and are coded -3 for every
subsequent question.

BRIEF VARIABLE DESCRIPTIONS

Variable names do not reflect actual item numbers from the original
McArdle & Woodcock test in any way. Numbers within the variable
names correspond to the order in which the questions were asked or
    potentially asked.
    _____________________________________________________________________

    HMCASTAT-HMCAREL: Module-Level Status Variables.

    HI600RE-HI614RE: Variables indicating participant's responses
                         to number series questions.

HI600RET-HI614RET: Variables indicating the amount of time it
took to answer questions corresponding with
                         variable name.

HI615RE: Variable gives a number (0-3) that indicates
the number of correct questions out of the
first three and determines the route taken in
the second half of number series task.

HI616RE: What group of questions participant received
                         and global refusal during introduction.

HI621RE: NS Rasch Score, determined by the correct
answers provided on two sets of questions.

HI622RE: Simple Score, determined by adding the number
of correct answers together, extra points
                         given for harder questions.

Note: For many cases a participant's spouse or other family member was present during the interview. This sometimes resulted in the participant relying on the other person for help in answering some or many of the questions. At the end of each module the interviewer indicated the amount of help the participant received and who provided that help. That assessment is covered by codes 1 through 5. Additionally, a code of 7 indicates that the entire interview was administered to a proxy while a code of 6 indicates that this particular module was answered by a proxy but other modules were answered by the participant.

Note: If this module was administered via proxy or if the participant received help answering the questions in this module then we record the relationship of the proxy/helper to the participant. Although most participants relied on only one helper or proxy for the interview, some had more than one. Thus the value of the relationship code may vary across the modules.
