WLS Codebooks

Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.

Mail: Internet

Graduate Mail: Internet Module

OVERVIEW

The Internet Module, although newly introduced to the 2011 mail survey, is
largely composed of Internet-oriented survey items drawn from the Social and
Civic Participation and Health Behaviors sections of the 2004 questionnaire.
Items inquiring about the reasons Internet access was first obtained for the
participant's household, the frequency with which the participant uses e-mail
to correspond with various people, and the amount of time they spend using the
Internet and e-mail in a typical week have been repeated. Additionally, items
calling for information about the participant's usage of the Internet for
researching personal health and healthcare - originally introduced during the
2004 mail survey - have been expanded upon to include questions about their
evaluations and perceptions of searching for health information online and
their use of the Internet to contact or research the quality of doctors'
offices.

For further data on the presence and usage of a computer in the participant's
household and/or the participant's reasons for not having a computer or the
Internet, see also the CAPI administered 2011 Internet Use Module.

Note: This variable stems from a check box on the mail survey prefaced by the following statement: "If your home does NOT have a connection to the Internet, check here [] and SKIP Question 2". Thus, if the participant did not check the box, they were assumed to have Internet access in their household. If the box was checked, variables JZ178RER, JZ182RER, JZ186RER, JZ190RER, JZ194RER, and JZ198RER - all of which stem from question 1 of the mail survey's Internet Module - have been assigned values of "-2" and coded as inappropriate by virtue of the participant's household lacking Internet access.

Note: This is a listing of whether or not "interest in using the Web for recreation" was an important rationale for anyone in the participant's household when it first obtained Internet access. Each digit, from left to right, is dedicated to a person or people who live in the participant's household. The first digit represents the participant, the second represents the participant's spouse (if applicable), and the third represents anyone else who lives in the participant's household. A "1" at any digit means "interest in using the Web for recreation" was among the most important reasons that person (or group of people) first wanted to obtain Internet access for the household, a "2" means it was not, and a "9" means we could not ascertain - due to a lack of knowledge on the part of the participant completing the mail survey, a refusal to provide such information, or missing data - whether or not it was among the most important reasons that person (or people) wanted Internet access. Thus, a value of "212" on JZ178RER would signify that interest in using the Web for recreation was among the most important reasons the participant's spouse first wanted to obtain Internet access for the household, but was not among the most important reasons for anyone else in the household. A value of "191" would signify that interest in using the Web for recreation was among the most important reasons the participant and someone other than their spouse first wanted to obtain Internet access for the household, but that we were not able to ascertain whether or not this was also true for the participant's spouse. A value of "222" indicates that interest in using the Web for recreation was NOT among the most important reasons the participant's household first obtained Internet access at all. A value of "999" indicates that it cannot be determined whether or not it was among the most important reasons for any members of the household. This format is a departure from the manner in which the same data from the 2004 mail survey was presented. During that round of data collection, four separate variables were used to represent whether or not the rationale in question was among the most important reasons the participant's household first obtained Internet access: one for the participant (analogous to the first digit in this variable), one for their spouse (analogous to the second digit in this variable), one for anyone else living in the household (analogous to the third digit in this variable), and one for the rationale not being among the most important reasons at all (analogous to a value of "222" on this variable versus it having a value of anything else).
Note: See JZ177RER for an explanation of how values of "-2" were assigned for this variable.

Thus, if the participant did not check the box, they were assumed to use the World Wide Web and/or e-mail. If the box was checked, variables JZ214RER, JZ215RER, JZ216RER, JZ217RER, JZ218RER, and JZ219RER - all of which stem from question 3 of the mail survey's Internet Module - have been assigned values of "-2" and coded as inappropriate by virtue of the participant not using the World Wide Web or e-mail.
