WLS Codebooks

Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.

In Person: Interviewer Observations and Characteristics

JINTOBS Interviewer Observations and Characteristics Module

OVERVIEW

The interviewer observations module is new to the 2011 round of data
collection. It includes information regarding the participants, given by the
interviewer as well as information regarding the interviewers themselves.

Interviewers were asked to comment on different personality and behavioral
aspects of the participants, in addition to the location of the interview. If
the interview took place in the participant's place of residence, the
interviewers were asked to assess the state of the building the participant
lived in, as well as the buildings surrounding the participant's residence and
the neighborhood as a whole. Finally, the interviewer's reported if the
participants made any comments during the interview about being enrolled or not
being enrolled in Medicare or Medicare Part A.

Data were also collected by the UW Survey Center containing information about
the interviewers themselves. The interviewers were asked about basic
demographic information including gender, birthdate, height, race & ethnicity.
They were also asked information specific to their experience as an
interviewer, including whether they conducted field or phone interviews, when
they started working for WLS as well as when they stopped and how many years of
experience they had in the survey research field before becoming an interviewer
for WLS.
