In Person: Household Roster

JHH Household Roster Module

OVERVIEW

With the exception of questions about household member limitations due to
medical conditions, illnesses, or disabilities, the 2011 Household Roster
Module solicits the same information from participants as its predecessor from
the 2004 collection wave. New to the 2011 wave are questions about household
type, ownership, and how any rent or other household fees are paid. Information
about the participant's household was collected in the following manner:

The participant's household type - whether a private residence or
some other arrangement - was determined based on where their
interview took place and/or their self-report. If the participant
does not live in a private residence, they were asked how they pay
      for their accomodations.

If the participant does live in a private residence, they were
asked if anybody other than their spouse or cohabiting partner
lives in their household. For each additional household member,
the participant was asked to provide the individual's name, sex,
birth date, relationship to them, and to indicate when they began
      living together.

After this, the participant was asked whether they live in a house,
apartment, or condo and whether their private residence is owned
or rented. Regardless of their answers, they were subsequently
asked whether each household member helps to pay the bills
associated with living in the residence. They were also allowed to
name up to three other people not living in the residence who help
pay the bills. If such people were named, the participant was
asked about the nature of their relationship. For participants
living in an owned private residence, we additionally determined
whether or not each household member has any ownership of it.

For information about the nature of the Household Roster Module and our
household data at prior collection waves, please see Appendix D (cor511,
cor876, and cor968). No new documentation about household data was added to the
appendix for the 2011 collection wave.

Note: For many cases a participant's spouse or other family member was present during the interview. This sometimes resulted in the participant relying on the other person for help in answering some or many of the questions. At the end of each module the interviewer indicated the amount of help the participant received and who provided that help. That assessment is covered by codes 1 through 5. Additionally, a code of 7 indicates that the entire interview was administered to a proxy while a code of 6 indicates that this particular module was answered by a proxy but other modules were answered by the participant.

Note: Since the participant is included in our count of household members, HE001HE must have a positive value. If the participant lives in a non-private residence (HE020HE = 2), they were not asked about household members and have a default value of "1" on HE001HE. All participants who live in private residences, on the other hand, were asked to report on all of their household members. In rare cases, the participant's private residence was mistakenly classified as non-private by the interviewer. When this occurred, the participant was not asked about members of their household and - as such - HE001HE merely reflects confirmed household members (at most, the participant and their co-residential spouse or cohabiting partner), not necessarily all household members. Please see HE020HE for more information on the distinction between private and non-private residences.
