In Person: Caregiving

JCARE Caregiving Module

OVERVIEW

The Caregiving Module was first introduced during the 1993 collection wave,
when participants were asked to report on household members' long-term health
conditions, their most involved experiences as providers and/or recipients of
personal care in the past twelve months, and any analogous spousal caregiving
or receiving experiences. The following details about episodes of caregiving
and receiving were collected from 1993 participants: their relationship to the
care recipient or provider; the health condition that necessitated care; the
month and year in which the arrangement began; what type of care was given or
received; the amount of time committed to care provision; and why the episode
ended. In 2004, questions about caregiving were moved to the Volunteering
Module and limited to addressing participant experiences as providers of care
in the past twelve months; caregiving details were also narrowed down to
include only a primary recipient's relationship to the participant, underlying
health conditions, the month and year caregiving began, and why it ended. In
2011, although questions about caregiving returned to the 1993 convention of
occupying a distinct survey module, the 2004 wave's singular emphasis on
participant experiences as providers of care was replicated. In a departure
from previous waves, caregiving was more precisely construed as personally
caring for a family member or friend on an unpaid basis, with information
collected from participants as follows:

Participants who reported being current providers of unpaid personal
care were asked how many people they were presently caring for and -
if more than one - to focus on whomever they were giving the most care
to. The following details were then collected about the participant's
most extensive current episode of caregiving: the recipient's
sex and relationship to them (including which child or sibling if
applicable); the recipient's age; the health condition necessitating
personal care; whether the participant or someone else provides most
of the care; hours of care provided in an average week; how far away
the participant lives from the recipient; desire for more caregiving
help from family or friends; and when the caregiving episode began.
If the participant reported having provided more unpaid personal care
to someone else in the past - or if they were not currently serving
as a caregiver - they were (also) asked about their most extensive
completed episode of caregiving, with the same details collected as
for a current episode. Participants reporting on completed caregiving
episodes were additionally asked why the arrangement had ended.

While the 2011 Caregiving Module is somewhat similar to both its 1993 and 2004
predecessors (albeit in different ways), it was rarely possible to construct
analysis variables consistent with those from past waves. As such, this module
should be approached as a distinct entity by virtue of its dual emphasis on
both current and completed caregiving episodes. For information about the
nature of our caregiving data at prior collection waves, please see Appendix M,
as well as CORs 841 and 953 in Appendix G. No new documentation about
caregiving data was added to the appendix for the 2011 collection wave.

Note: For many cases a participant's spouse or other family member was present during the interview. This sometimes resulted in the participant relying on the other person for help in answering some or many of the questions. At the end of each module the interviewer indicated the amount of help the participant received and who provided that help. That assessment is covered by codes 1 through 5. Additionally, a code of 7 indicates that the entire interview was administered to a proxy while a code of 6 indicates that this particular module was answered by a proxy but other modules were answered by the participant.

Although most participants relied on only one helper or proxy for the interview, some had more than one. Thus the value of the relationship code may vary across the modules.

Note: Participants were given the following information before answering this survey question: "Sometimes people provide regular unpaid care or assistance to a family member (including children) or a friend who has a long-term illness or a disability. Unpaid care may include help with health or personal needs or household chores. It might be taking care of finances, arranging for outside services, taking to medical appointments, or visiting regularly to see how they are doing. The relative or friend you are helping may be someone who lives with you or somewhere else including another city. This includes your husband/wife/partner."

The variable is not a full replication of RV001RE because it was not asked of participants who were currently providing unpaid personal care to someone, regardless of when they began doing so (see HV600RE).

Note: This variable, although similar to RV030RE from the 1993 wave and GV060RE from the 2004 wave, does not fully replicate either. RV030RE and GV060RE capture the participant's relationship to whomever they previously reported providing the most care to ever for a period of one month or more (spouses excluded for GV060RE). This variable, however, does not necessarily require the participant's most intensive episode as a caregiver to have a minimum duration of one month. Said restriction, while in place for participants who were not caring for anyone at the time of their 2011 interview (see HV001RE), was never communicated to those who reported being current caregivers but having provided more care to someone else in the past (see HV600RE and HV614RE); participants serving as current caregivers who did not definitively report having provided more care to someone else in the past are not covered by this variable.

Note: Century-months are the months elapsed since the beginning of the year 1900. For this variable, they were calculated by subtracting 1900 from the calendar year reported by the participant as when they began helping the referenced person, multiplying the difference by 12, and then adding between 1 and 12 to quantify the corresponding month reported by the participant. If data on the month in which the participant began helping the referenced person was unavailable, the exact century-month was approximated using June (6), the middlemost month of the year. For more information on century-months, see cor607 in Appendix O. This variable is only applicable to participants currently serving as caregivers if they definitively indicated the current episode does not constitute their most intensive one ever (see HV614RE).

Participants serving as current caregivers who did not definitively report having provided more care to someone else in the past are not covered by this variable (see HV614RE).
