WLS Codebooks

Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.

In Person: Access to and Utilization of Health Care

JACUTIL Access to and Utilization of Health Care Module

OVERVIEW

Although primarily composed of replicated questions from the 2004 CATI
interview's "Access to Health Care and Insurance" section, the 2011 Access to
and Utilization of Health Care Module did not prompt participants to report on
the previously addressed topics of health insurance coverage, plan
characteristics, or associated costs; for such information, please see the
newly introduced "Health Insurance Coverage" section of the 2011 mail survey.
This module exclusively focuses on visits to medical and mental health
professionals within the last twelve months, as well as the participant's
history with their usual source and provider of health care (including details
such as provider type and medical specialty). Questions about why the
participant switched to their current source and provider of health care were
not carried forward for the 2011 wave.

For information about the nature of our health care access and utilization data
at prior collection waves, please see Appendix P (CORs 845 and 971). No new
documentation specifically related to this module was added to the appendix for
the 2011 wave.

Note: For many cases a participant's spouse or other family member was present during the interview. This sometimes resulted in the participant relying on the other person for help in answering some or many of the questions. At the end of each module the interviewer indicated the amount of help the participant received and who provided that help. That assessment is covered by codes 1 through 5. Additionally, a code of 7 indicates that the entire interview was administered to a proxy while a code of 6 indicates that this particular module was answered by a proxy but other modules were answered by the participant.

Note: If this module was administered via proxy or if the participant received help answering the questions in this module then we record the relationship of the proxy/helper to the participant. Although most participants relied on only one helper or proxy for the interview, some had more than one. Thus the value of the relationship code may vary across the modules.

hsu00re: Is there a doctor's office or other medical facility that Participant usually goes to when they are sick or need advice about their health?

If the participant indicated they were not currently sick, the interviewer was instructed to ask, "If you were sick, is there a place you would usually go to?"

hsuscrec: Summary of whether Participant has at least one usual doctor's office or other medical facility they can go to when sick or in need of advice about their health.

1 YES, AT LEAST ONE USUAL MEDICAL FACILITY 2680 3115 5795
Note: This variable was constructed solely on the basis of HSU00RE. Participants assigned values of 1, 3, or 4 on HSU00RE have been coded as "1" on this variable, signifying "yes, at least one usual medical facility"; this includes participants who indicated they have multiple usual places they can go to receive care or health advice, as well as those who reported having a usual place they have not yet gone to. Participants assigned a value of 2 on HSU00RE have been coded as "0" on this variable, signifying "no, does not have usual medical facility".

Note: This variable's categories differ from those applied to its predecessor from the 2004 collection wave (see GSU10RE). Category "1" from the 2004 wave - "office or clinic (or health center)" - was split into two separate categories for the 2011 wave: private office (1) and clinic (2). Categories "2" (hospital emergency room) and "3" (some other place) from the 2004 wave now comprise categories "4" and "5" respectively. Finally, an entirely new category was added, "hospital outpatient clinic" (3).

Note: Due to a CAPI instrument error, participants who refused to provide the name of their usual medical facility were not asked how long they have been going there for health care; such cases have been assigned values of "-4" on this variable, signifying "not ascertained".

Note: In 2004, participants were only asked about medical specialty if they reported usually seeing a doctor when visiting their usual medical facility; for the 2011 wave, however, all participants who reported seeing the same health care provider (their "usual provider") always, most of the time, or at least sometimes when going to their usual medical facility were asked about specialty regardless of their usual provider's professional classification (see HSU52RE and HSU53REA). Thus, while this variable parallels GSU40RE and GSUTPREC from the 2004 collection wave, it should not be interpreted as directly comparable. "Usual medical facility" means whichever one the participant reported going to most often when sick or in need of advice about their health (see HSU10RE).
