HUI Items/Logical Imputation In addition to creating the traditional HUI-3 scales, we also created a modified version that imputed all "Don't Know" responses as "No" to reclaim as much missing data as possible. A brief evaluation of several hundred cases with "Don't Know" responses indicated that these were, in general, "No" responses clouded with qualifications like "Sometimes I can." It was decided that if a respondent could not ALWAYS perform the mentioned task, that there was a degree of limitation and, for purposes of imputation, these were best handled as "No." We did not recreate individual dimension components with the logically imputed values. GX203LRE through GX210SRE are computed durectly from the HUI-3 algorithms. For scoring purposes, the item "During the past four weeks, have you been able to hear at all?" was assumed to be "Yes" because of the telephone modality. See also the Graduate Telephone Health Module flowchart for skip pattern of HUI-3 items. See also HUI-3 Documentation: http://www.fhs.mcmaster.ca/hug/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Cancer Items GX348RE-GX350ERE Respondents that indicated that a doctor had diagnosed them with cancer (other than minor skin) were asked a follow-up question about what organ or system of the body was affected. These open-ended responses were coded into the ICD-9 classification scheme for malignant neoplasms. Up to three separate areas were coded (Private Release Data). However, these were collapsed for public analysis data to prevent identifiability (GX350DRE,GX350ERE). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. Mental Illness Items GX361RE-GX362BRE Responses to the follow-up item "What was that specific diagnosis?" were coded into the ICD-9 classification scheme for mental illnesses. These are not available publicly. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D. Illness/Disability and Personal Care GV032ARE-GV032FRE These items were coded into the ICD-9 system. GV032ARE-GV032CRE are private versions that have full diagnostic codes. GV032DRE-GV032FRE are public versions that have been collapsed into major diagnostic categories. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- J.Yonker 06/22/2006 End of Document. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
