Overview of Cognition Coding: Expl of Open-Ended Coding Answers to the cognition similarities section are scored 0, 1, and 2, whenever possible with 0 being (don't know), 1 (1 point answer),and 2 (2 point answer). These scores were assigned by the program: score_all.do. See Cor 859 for more information. All "don't know" answers were checked to assure that this was the only answer given for the question. If the only answer given was a "don't know," the response was scored 0. If not, the response was sent through further scoring. In order to give the respondent the highest score possible, the program first checks for score 2 responses. In order to receive a score 2, the response must include, somewhere within, a score 2 answer. If not found, the program searches for a 1 point answer. If not found, the program searches for a 0 point answer. To be considered for a 1 or 0 score, the respondent must have answered 1 or 0 answers respectively. Common misspellings and grammatical errors are included in the program to ensure inclusion of these cases. If no score can be assigned, the case (question, number, and IDSWL) is manually scored. (Also see Cor 458 for open-ended cognition similarities coding information in the 1992/92 follow-up). III. Lists of Open-ended "Praise and Punishment" scores.
