COR458.WP5 March 16,1994 Updated Jan, 2002 Scoring for Cognition Items - Primary Sample 1992/93 Follow-Up Scores are assigned to the responses for cognition questions by a program whenever possible. Scores are 0, 1 and 2, with 0 being the lowest and 2 the highest. First, all questions are checked to determine if the only answer is one indicating don't know. If that is the case, then the answer is given a score of 0. If that is not the case, then answers are checked question by question. For a respondent's answer to be given a score of 2, one of the "2" responses simply needs to appear somewhere in the respondent's answer. For the program to assign a score of 0 or 1, the only answer given by the respondent, must be one of those specified as 0 or 1 respectively. This prevents the program from giving a lower score than the responent should receive, in case he/she answered with a higher scoring response which was not picked out by the program. The program includes many common misspellings of answers as well as the correct spellings. So that the highest possible score is given, the program first searches for any occurrence of a string which should be scored 2. If this is not found, the program checks for an exact match with any 1 answer and if this is not found, it checks for an exact match with a 0 answer. If no score can be assigned, the question number and answer (along with the IDSWL) are written to a file to be scored by a person. Those which can be scored are written to different file which includes the IDSWL, question number and score. The following pages contain a list of scores for specified responses - first for all questions, then for individual questions. Searching for zero scores in every question. These must appear alone, with nothing else in the answer but one of these possibilities. can't think of an answer dk don't know dont know don't see anything alike got me have no clue haven't a clue I
