COR613 January 5, 1996 Re: Modified assignment of SEI (Duncan) and prestige (Siegel) scores for 1970-basis Census occupation lines when industry or class of worker is missing (for use in COR 612). ALL OF THE CHANGES DESCRIBED IN COR 613, 613A, AND 613B ARE INCORPORATED INTO COR612C. Rationale: There are some special problems in mapping occupational aspirations or expectations into SEI (Duncan) or prestige (Siegel) scores in 1975-77 WLS data. For more details, see COR315 (March 1979), COR315 Addendum I (July 1979), and Memo 122 (January 1996). 1. In the cases of OCR10 (Respondent's aspiration for occupation 10 years in the future) and XOCR10 (Sibling Respondent's aspiration for occupation 10 years in the future), detailed occupation and industry were collected, but the "class of worker" item ascertained only whether R or SR wanted to be self-employed or not self-employed. Thus, it is possible to map into SEI and prestige using the full set of codes for splits as described in COR521C. (Similar observations apply to all of the occupational aspiration items in the 1992-94 (Wave 2) WLS data.) 2. In the cases of occupational expectations and aspirations for selected child, ascertained in the 1975 Respondent interview, no effort was made to ascertain industry or class of worker. In these two cases, OCASSK (detailed occupation of respondent's aspirations for child) and OCEXSK (detailed occupation of respondent's expectations for child), SEI and prestige should be mapped directly from the revised list of "male" scores adapted from Featherman, Sobel, and Dickens (1975, Appendix B), which is appended in COR613B (also, see Memo 122 (January 1996)). 3. In the cases of the retrospective reports of youthful aspirations, ascertained in the 1975 Respondent interview or -- for 1975 Nonrespondents and 1977 Sibling Nonrespondents -- in the 1992-94 telephone interview, we have data on occupation and industry, but not class of worker. These two cases are OCZ (detailed occupation for the job respondent expected to have when respondent was a senior in high school) and XOCZ (detailed occupation for the job sibling respondent expected to have when respondent was about 16 years old). Class of worker is not used in the assignment of 1970-basis prestige (Siegel) scores, so the code in COR521C can be used without modification. In the case of the SEI, two occupation lines are split by class of worker. Code 245 is split both by industry and class of worker, and code 964 is split only by class of worker. COR613A gives average values of the SEI to be assigned within industry for code 245 and for code 964, which should be assigned to these two items. For lines other than code 245 and 964, SEI (Duncan) scores should be assigned using the code in COR521C. These directions, plus appropriate treatment of codes for missing data and non- labor force activities, are incorporated in COR 612B and COR 612C. Note: This text is in COR613.WP5. The ASCII file containing the list of modified SEI (Duncan) scores is COR613A.ASC. The ASCII file containing the list of "male" SEI (Duncan) and prestige (Siegel) scores is COR613B.ASC.
