COR582.ASC ** CHANGES IN WAGE RATE VARIABLES RG021JJD AND RG022JJD ** In the current job section (JOBC), the wage rate variable and corresponding flag (RG021JJD and RG022JJD) have been replaced with corrected versions. Additional minor errors have been corrected in the JOBC section. In the process of creating wage rates for 1993/94 sibling respondents, we have uncovered errors in the 1992/93 respondent wage rates. In addition, we have made some minor changes to the wage variables for the 1992/93 respondents, to make their wage rates as comparable to the 1993/94 siblings as possible. A new version of the wage rate variable, RG021JJD, has replaced the previously-released wage rate. Because some of these wage rate variables may have been used in published work, the old variable has been renamed to RG066JJD and placed at the end of the JOBC section for archival purposes. Similarly, changes to the flag variable RG022JJD were made, and the old version of the wage flags was renamed to RG067JJD and moved to the end of the JOBC section for archival purposes. Very minor changes have been made to the other wage variables RG006JJC-RG019JJC (only five respondents affected), and RG020JJC (35 respondents affected). We strongly recommend that you use the new version of the respondent wage variables for all future work. The major effects of these changes has been to slightly decrease the wage rate of most respondents. A summary of the difference between RG021JJD (revised wage) and RG066JJD (old wage) follows: - If total hours worked at all jobs (v266o) is missing, we use hours worked at main job (v266m) as an estimate. (These cases were coded 9999999 previously). - If missing data on hourly base salary or gross salary, we use average monthly income. (Total yearly income from OINC was used previously). - If monthly salary is used to create the wage rate, assume 4.33 weeks are worked per month. (5 weeks/months was used in error previously). - If refused, don't know, or missing hours per week, use 40 hours per week as an estimate. (These cases were coded 9999999 previously). - If yearly salary is truncated at 999,998 or above, and monthly salary is truncated at 90,000 or above, use Total Yearly Income (from OINC section) to calculate wage rate. (Truncated value was used previously. This change does NOT affect the public- use version). - If refused, don't know, or missing for full-time/full-year work (v268s), use 40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year as an estimate. (These cases were coded 9999999 previously). Frequency Description of Change 1770 Observations changed wage rate or wage flag 35 Observations changed from N/A wage rate to estimated wage rate 74 Observations changed from using annual income to estimate wage rate, to using a job-specific measure (annual income, monthly income, etc.) 4 Observations were changed to refusals -804 Median change (RG021JJD-RG066JJD ~= $.80)
