Cor962.txt 06/13/07 CREATION OF ANALYSIS VARIABLES FOR SKID MODULE OVERVIEw In 1977 or 1994, for those sibling's who were not interviewed in 1977; a roster of the Sibling Respondent's children was collected. First name, sex, month and year of birth, and relationship was ascertained for each child. Most of the information about the children from previous interviews was preloaded in the 2005 survey. Children who were NOT biological, adopted or step relationship were omitted from the preloads. During the 2005 interview, the Sibling Respondent was asked to confirm and update the previous information; and asked about any other children not already listed: "Please include biological, adopted, or step children, as well as other children you consider to be a part of your family. Also include all children who were born alive, even if they are no longer living." This was the first time the Sibling was specifically instructed to include children who were no longer living. Although respondents had given reports of deceased children previously. The interviewers were instructed to include grandchildren in the household module if the Sibling Respondent mentioned them during this module. Some Sibling Respondents were no longer married to the parent of stepchildren whom they had listed in a previous interview. If the Graduate did not have current information about this step child and no longer considered him/ her to be a part of the family, that step child was deleted from the children's roster. This deletion of previous step-children along with addition of newly acquired children either due to birth, marriage or adoption results in a modified roster for some respondents when comparing current roster to 1994 roster. After the roster of children is constructed, the roster is ordered from oldest to youngest. Thus it is not always appropriate to compare the same roster position between 1994 and 2005. cd020n indicates the child's roster position (birth order) in the 1994 data file. (n is 01,02,03, 04,... 10) BRIEF VARIABLE DESCRIPTIONS cd001kd Total number of children reported in 2005. cd101kd Any additions to child roster since last interview? cd102kd Any deceased children at time of 1994 or 2005 interview? cd103kd Any children living with the respondent? Table entries, one for each of up to 13 children. Last two digits indicate the table number. Only the prefix is specified below. The roster is ordered by birth date from oldest to youngest. Due to additions/deletions the same roster position may refer to a different child now than in 1994. See variable gd020 for the child's roster position in 1994. cd003 Sex of child. cd004 Relationship of child to respondent. cd005 Is child alive? cd006-cd007 Month, day, year of child's death. cd107,cda07 Cause of child's death. cd207 Was cause of child's death from long term illness? cd010 Recoded-highest grade of regular schooL child ever attended. cd011 Did child complete the year of school in CD010? cd210 Highest grade ever attended or degree from regular school. cd014 Date of child's birth. cd015 Year of survey when child originally reported. cd017 Child currently lives with respondent? cd018 Roster ID number of child. cd019 Entity number of child. cd020 Child's birth order in 1994 children's roster. During the 1977 interview (or 1994 interview if Sibling was not in the 1977 sample), one of the Sibling's children was randomly chosen as the selected child. The selected child has one variable for each of the variables listed in the table above with sk as the suffix. The following additional information is available for the selected child: cd009sk Selected child's marital status. cd104sk Birth order of selected child. cj002sk State of selected child's residence. CODING See cor867 for cause of death coding instructions. PROBLEMS A few sibling respondents were no longer married to the parent of stepchild/stepchildren reported in previous interviews. If they no longeR considered this step-child a member of their family, the step-child was deleted from the children's roster. PEOPLE Brendan Day - Coding of Sibling module for Cases instrument.
