Cor832.txt 12/18/06 Creation of Analysis Variables for gkid module OVERVIEW In 1975 and/or 1992-93 a roster of the Graduate Respondent's children was collected. In 1975,the Graduate was instructed to "... tell me the name, sex, and the month and year of birth for each of your children." In 1992-93, those Graduate's who had participated in the 1975 study were asked to confirm and update the 1975 information about children. They were also asked whether each child was biological, adopted, step, foster or some other relationship. Complete details regarding name, sex, DOB, and relationship to Graduate were obtained for any children who had joined the family since 1975. Graduates were instructed to "..include biological, adopted, step or foster children as well as other children you consider to be a part of your family who have joined your family since 1975." Graduates who were not interviewed in 1975 were asked "Do you have any children? Please include biological, adopted, step or foster children as well as other children you consider to be a part of your family." Most of the information about the children from 1975 and/or 1992-93 interviews was preloaded in the 2003-05 survey. Children who were NOT biological, adopted or step relationship were omitted from the preloads. During the 2003-05 interview, the Graduate Respondent was asked to confirm and update the previous information; and asked about any other children not already listed: "Please include biological, adopted, or step children, as well as other children you consider to be a part of your family. Also include all children who were born alive, even if they are no longer living." This was the first time the Graduate was specifically instructed to include children who were no longer living. Although respondents had given reports of deceased children previously. The interviewers were instructed to include grandchildren in the household module if the Graduate Respondent mentioned them during this module. Some Graduate Respondents were no longer married to the parent of step children whom they had listed in a previous interview. If the Graduate did not have current information about this step child and no longer considered him/ her to be a part of the family, that step child was deleted from the children's roster. This deletion of previous step-children along with addition of newly acquired children either due to birth, marriage or adoption results in a modified roster for some respondents when comparing current roster to 1992-93 roster. After the roster of children is constructed, the roster is ordered from oldest to youngest. Thus it is not always appropriate to compare the same roster position between 1993 and 2004. gd020n indicates the child's roster position (birth order) in the 1992-93 data file. (n is 01,02,03, 04,... 10) BRIEF VARIABLE DESCRIPTIONS gj040sk Is selected child in the random sample for similarity, comparison, support questions: gd104kd-gd107kd, gj047sk-gj051sk? gd001kd Total number of children reported in 2003-05. gd101kd Any additions to child roster since last interview? gd102kd Any deceased children at time of 1992-93 or 2003-05 interview? gd103kd Any children living with the respondent? gd104kd-gd107kd How much Respondent's children: make Respondent feel loved/ cared for, make too many demands on her/ him, willing to listen, are critical of what Respondent does? The roster is ordered by birth date from oldest to youngest. Due to additions/ deletions the same roster position may refer to a different child now than in 1992-93. See variable gd020 for the child's roster position in 1992-93. gd003 Sex of child. gd004 Relationship of child to respondent. gd005 Is child alive? gd006-gd007 Month, day, year of child's death. gd107 Cause of child's death. gd207 Was cause of child's death from long term illness? gd009 Child's marital status. gd010 Recoded-highest grade of regular school child ever attended. gd011 Did child complete the year of school in GD010? gd210 Highest grade ever attended or degree from regular school. gd014 Date of child's birth. gd015 Year of survey when child originally reported. gd016 Is child currently working. gd017 Child currently lives with respondent? gd018 Roster ID number of child. gd019 Entity number of child. gd020 Child's birth order in 1992-93 children's roster. During the 1975 interview (or 1992-93 interview if Graduate did not respond in 1975), one of the Graduate's children was randomly chosen as the selected child. The selected child has one variable for each of the variables listed in the table above with sk as the suffix. The following additional information is available for the selected child: gd002sk Is the selected child in 2003-05 the same child selected in 1975? gj002sk State of selected child's residence. gj202sk City of selected child's residence. gj021sk-gj038sk Selected child currently working, ever worked, class of worker, 1990 census codes, major occupation and industry codes, Nakoa-Treas Prestige Rating, 1990 occupational education and occupational income scores. gj043sk-gj046sk Graduate's frequency of contact with selected child. gj047sk-gj048sk Similarity of outlook on life and closeness of Graduate and selected child. gj049sk-gj051sk Comparison between Graduate and selected child in terms of education, work and finances. gj057sk State of selected child's death. gj058sk City of selected child's death. gj059sk-gj068sk For deceased selected child: ever worked, class of worker, 1990 census codes, major occupation and industry codes, Nakoa-Treas Prestige Rating, 1990 occupational education and occupational income scores, year stopped working.
