MEMO 115A Creation of education variables for the 1992/93 respondent analysis tape. (WLS23R) A. The following questions were supposed to be coded completely by LSSC but they did not code them for the first 2000 cases. LSSC coded them 000 (Other) were they were given to our coding section for additional coding. All of the codes created for the major field of study (s3n, s5b, s3A, and s12) have been put into the open-ended file so they could be recoded using the code created for the analysis tape. There were also many codes remaining for s5b which were still 000. We scanned those to see if they could have been coded more completely. The original coding by LSSC will be retained on the raw data tape if anyone is interested in comparing the coding. The coding for major fields should have been done for the siblings by LSSC and should not be coded again. Major Fields of Study Variables: RB017RED Major field or specialty at the college or university where earned bachelor's degree or its equivalent. (@EDMJBA, IN75, 3V, 3k, s3n, 5a, s5b, s3Z,3n, 9, 12, RB005REC, RB010RE) RB021RED Major field or specialty of MOST RECENT degree obtained. (@EDDGM, IN75, 3k, 3n, 5, 5a, 5b, RB007REC) B. The following variables for college names have not been completed. RB013REE For respondents with less than a bachelor's degree, college code of the college last attended - only available for 75NRs and post-75 schooling for 75Rs. (Based on MOST RECENT degree obtained.) (IN75, 3b, s3c, 3j, 3t, s3x, sz2I,3v, 3m, 4g, s4h, 5, s5d, 5s, 6, s6p, s6a, RB004RED, RB010RE) (not available on public release) RB015RED College code of the college where respondent earned bachelor's degree or its equivalent. (@EDPLBA, IN75, 3k, 3m, 3v, 3x, 3V, 3W, 5a, 5d, 6a, 9, RB005REC, RB010RE) (not available on public release) RB018RED College code of the college where respondent obtained MOST RECENT degree. (@EDCLN2, IN75, 3k, 3m, 5a, 5d, RB007REC) (not available on public release) RB024REE College code of college last attended since obtaining MOST RECENT degree (only available for those who took post-degree courses since they were last interviewed in 1957 or 1975.) (IN75,3t,3u,3v,3m,3x,5s,4g,4h,5,5d,6,6a,RB010RE,RB022RED) (not available on public release) C. The creation of the education summary variables ran into problems because education is no longer cumulative. Some of the 1975 respondents who got some sort of higher degree before 1975 returned to school after 1975, and got another degree which may have been "lower" than the first degree obtained. For example, some respondents who got a Bachelor's Degree by 1975 returned to school for an Associate's Degree after 1975. Thus, their 1992 degree level is lower than their 1975 degree level. This situation holds for only a few of the 1975 respondents (13), but because of the conceptual difference between "highest degree" and "most recent degree", some new variables were added, and the meanings of most of the summary variables had to be changed. Following are the decisions made for the variables most affected. RB003RED Latest (1992) levels of equivalent years of education are calculated, and then compared to 1975 levels (EDEQYR), and the highest value reported for RB003RED. Equivalent years of education is constructed just as it was in 1975, despite the different meanings that some degrees may have today. This is done because many respondents appear to have reported the same degree twice (i.e., a degree received before 1975 is reported in the 1992 interview as being conferred after 1975), and differing equivalent years of education should not be given for the same degree. If a 1975 respondent has an 'other' degree (5a=4), and this degree is not codeable (s5a=00), then the number of post-high-school years of education (RB002REC) is used to compute the level of latest degree. RB004RED Latest (1992) levels of education are calculated, and reported for RB004RED. If a 1975 respondent has an 'other' degree (5a=4) after 1975, and this degree is not codeable (s5a=00), then the number of post-high-school years of education (RB002REC) is used to compute the level of latest degree. RB005REC Latest (1992) degree levels are calculated, and then compared to 1975 levels (DGLEV), and the highest value is reported for RB005REC. If a 1975 respondent has an 'other' degree (5a=4) after 1975, and this degree is not codeable (s5a=00), then RB005REC is set to 7=DON'T KNOW. RB006REE Latest (1992) specific degrees are calculated. If case calculated is one of the 13 whose highest degree is lower than the most recent degree (RB009RED = 3), then EDDGNM is reported for RB006REE, otherwise, the latest specific degree received is reported. If a 1975 respondent has an 'other' degree (5a=4) after 1975, and this degree is not codeable (s5a=00), then RB006REE is set to 7=DON'T KNOW. RB007REC Latest (1992) degree levels are calculated, and reported in RB007REC. If a 1975 respondent has an 'other' degree (5a=4) after 1975, and this degree is not codeable (s5a=00), then RB007REC is set to 7=DON'T KNOW. RB008REC Latest (1992) specific degrees are calculated, and reported in RB007REC. If a 1975 respondent has an 'other' degree (5a=4) after 1975, and this degree is not codeable (s5a=00), then RB008REC is set to 7=DON'T KNOW. RB013REE This variable was constructed based on a respondent's MOST RECENT degree. To reconstruct based on HIGHEST degree, recode RB013REE to 999998 when RB009RED = 3. RB014REE This variable is constructed based on a respondent's MOST RECENT degree. To reconstruct based on HIGHEST degree, recode RB014REE to 9998 when RB009RED = 3. RB015RED Highest degree obtained (RB005REC) rather than most recent degree obtained is used to construct this variable, because the most recent degree obtained could be less than a bachelor's degree. RB016RED Highest degree obtained (RB005REC) rather than most recent degree obtained is used to construct this variable, because the most recent degree obtained could be less than a bachelor's degree. RB017RED Highest degree obtained (RB005REC) rather than most recent degree obtained is used to construct this variable, because the most recent degree obtained could be less than a bachelor's degree. RB018RED This variable is constructed using the respondent's MOST RECENT degree. To reconstruct this variable using HIGHEST degree, recode RB018RED to EDCLN2 when RB009RED = 3. RB019RED This variable is constructed using the respondent's MOST RECENT degree. To reconstruct this variable using HIGHEST degree, recode RB019RED to EDPLHL/1000 when RB009RED = 2. RB020RED This variable is constructed using the respondent's MOST RECENT degree. To reconstruct this variable using HIGHEST degree, recode RB020RED to CMEDDG when RB009RED = 3. RB021RED This variable is constructed using the respondent's MOST RECENT degree. To reconstruct this variable using HIGHEST degree, recode RB021RED to EDDGM when RB009RED = 3. RB022RED This variable is constructed using the respondent's MOST RECENT degree. To reconstruct this variable using HIGHEST degree, recode RB022RED to 1 when RB009RED = 3. (All persons who got a lower degree after 1975 had more education after obtaining their highest degree.) RB023REE This variable is constructed using the respondent's MOST RECENT degree. To reconstruct this variable using HIGHEST degree, recode RB023REE to EDADGY + RB011REC when EDADGY < 77 and RB011REC < 97 and RB009RED = 3. D. For Bachelor's degree variables RB015RED, RB016RED, and RB017RED, the Bachelor's degree characteristics (college, date received, and major field, respectively), for a Bachelor's received before 1975 may not match the characteristics of that Bachelor's degree reported in 1992. This occurs because 1975 respondents who received a Bachelor's degree before 1975, and then returned for some higher degree after 1975, are re-asked questions about their Bachelor's, and these values may not match the answers given in 1975. The summary variables contain the latest data given, so as to not loose data, but this data may not be the most accurate. Presumably, the 1975 responses were more accurate, because they were closer to the event. Using the 1975 variables EDPLBA (college code), CMDTBA (date completed Bachelor's), and EDMJBA (major field) for those who got their Bachelor's degree before 1975 would likely give the most accurate data. 6 RB015RED College code of the college where respondent earned bachelor's degree or its equivalent. (@EDPLBA, IN75, 3k, 3m, 3v, 3x, 3V, 3W, 5a, 5d, 6a, 9, RB005REC) {@EDPLBA, IN75, 3k, 3v, 3V, 5a, 9} 4 RB016RED Century-month completed bachelor's degree or its equivalent. (@CMDTBA, IN75, 3P, 3T, 3U, 3k, 3q, 3r, 3s, 5a, 5g, 5j, 5k, 7m, 8f, 8m, RB005REC, RB010RE) {@CMDTBA, IN75, 3P, 3T, 3U, 3k, 3q, 3r, 3s, 5a, 5g, 5j, 5k, 7m, 8f, 8m} 3 RB017RED Major field or specialty at the college or university where earned bachelor's degree or its equivalent. (@EDMJBA, IN75, 3V, 3k, s3n, 5a, s5b, s3z, 3n, 9, s12, RB005REC, RB010RE) {@EDMJBA, IN75, 3V, s3z, s3n, 9, s12} NOTE: For Bachelor's degree variables (RB015RED, RB016RED, and RB017RED), I used the HIGHEST DEGREE variable, RB005REC, to determine whether the respondent had ever received a Bachelor's degree. This is because some respondents' most recent degree could be lower than a Bachelor's degree. E. The scope of the post (most recent) degree variable RB025REE is different from variables RB024REE and RB026REE. RB025REE (century-month FIRST attended college after most recent degree) is only available for those who got degrees after their last interview, while RB024REE (college code of college attended after most recent degree), and RB026REE (century- month LAST attended college after most recent degree) are available for any respondent who took any classes after their last interview. This accounts for the discrepencies in the 8=Inapp categories for these three variables.
