6/12/07 SEDUC - Education Module For more information on the education module, see Appendix B cor974.txt OVERVIEW Information about the Sibling Respondent's education was collected in the following manner: -Whether respondents were born in Wisconsin was ascertained. If birth date information was missing for a given respondent, that information was ascertained as well. -Information on primary and post-secondary education was collected in this module. Whether the respondent attended primary school in Wisconsin and the name and location of Wisconsin primary schools attended the longest by the respondent were collected. The same data was collected about junior high school if IQ data for the sibling respondent was misisng. Whether the respondent had taken any courses for credit at a two or four-year college and whether the respondent had attained a degree since the last time they had been interviewed for the study was collected as well. If the respondent reported having attained a degree since the last interview, information about this degree was collected. Respondents who reported having taken classes and/or attaining a degree since the last interview were asked whether they were currently enrolled at a two or four-year college. BRIEF VARIABLE DESCRIPTIONS CB001RE-CB009RED: Summary of Educational History Using Data Collected in 1977,1993 and 2004. CB010RE, CB012REC: Update of the Educational History from the Time of the Last Interview with the Respondent Using 2004 Data Only. OPEN-ENDED CODING DECISIONS Within the education module for the sibling survey, the item >b3k< ascertaining the most recent degree since the last time the respondent was interviewed was established as an optional open-ended response. For our purposes, only degrees from a community college or university were considered codeable responses; licenses, accreditation classes, technical certificates and the like were not considered regular post- secondary degrees. These responses were recoded as -2 or "INAPPROPRIATE" because the respondent should not have been asked this item based on a previous screener question (>b3j<). In instances where the respondent earned a license, accreditation, certificate or the like, we corrected the data for b3j so that the correct response (2 or "No") for this item was recorded in the data. Medical, jurisdictional and doctorate degrees were coded under the same category while Master's including Master's of Business were coded under the same category for this item. Respondents who attained a two-year teaching degree at a teacher's college were recorded as having attained an Associate's degree while respondents who attained a three-year nursing degree were recorded as having attained a Bachelor's degree. Unlike the graduate survey, there was detailed information collected about the respondents junior high attendance. The only way a sibling was asked for this data was if we were missing their IQ scores. Open ended coding for these items were minimal with the exception for a handful of respondents who reported that in their experience primary schools and junior high schools were one in the same. Many people reported that they went to grades 1-8 in one school and 9-12 in another. In these instances, the details of the junior high were set equal to the details given regarding the primary school. The codeset used was 'sib education corrections'. PROBLEMS Aside from the description in the previous section, no serious problem cases arose in the education module.
