6/05/06 HEDUC - Education Module cor905.txt OVERVIEW Information about the Graduate Spouse's education was collected in the following manner: -The highest level of education the spouse attained. If birth date information was missing for a given respondent, that information was ascertained as well. -Information on secondary education was collected in this module. Whether the respondent attended the 9th grade or high school in Wisconsin and the name and location of the high school the graduate-spouse attended the longest by the respondent were collected. If the graduate-spouse was female, her name while attending this school was also ascertained. BRIEF VARIABLE DESCRIPTIONS AB001RE-AB005REC Summary of educational history using data collected in 2003. AB037RE-AB040RE Success in education, work, finances and family life. AB042RE-AB047REC Wisconsin secondary school variables using 2003 data. OPEN-ENDED CODING DECISIONS Within the education module for the graduate-spouse survey, no items were established as an optional open-ended response though some close-ended responses were re-coded after reviewing interview notes. This most often occurred in response to items about the highest level of education attained. For our purposes, only degrees from a community college or university were considered regular schooling; licenses, accreditation classes, technical certificates and the like were not considered regular post- secondary degrees. In instances where the respondent earned a license, accreditation, certificate or the like, we corrected the data for >h_b10< so that the correct response (2 or "No") for this item was recorded. Medical, jurisdictional and doctorate degrees were coded under the same category while Master's degrees including Master's of Business were coded under the same category for this item. Respondents who attained a two-year teaching degree at a teacher's college were recorded as having attained an Associate's degree while respondents who attained a three-year nursing degree were recorded as having attained a Bachelor's degree. PROBLEMS Aside from the description in the previous section, no serious problem cases arose in the education module.
