COMPUTER OPERATIONS REQUEST #368 Date: February 28, 1991 Subj: Clarification of the respondent's education variable in the 1975 sibling roster - selection of birth order and education variables. This COR was in response to a question about the creation of the education variable for the respondent entered in the sibling roster for the 1975 data. Appendix S to the codebook shows that the education variable used for the respondent in the sibling table is not EDEQYR, but EDYRCM. EDEQYR translates educational credentials into equivalent years, of schooling, while EDYRCM is simply the respondent's report of total number of years of college completed in Question 3b of the 1975 questionnaire. we added 12 to EDYRCM to obtain the number of years of schooling. You will get exact matches when you use BORSIB to identify the position of the respondent in the sibling table. But note that"00" which is less than 1 year and "88" which stands for inap, are both recorded in the sibling table as 12 years of school. We chose to use EDYRCM, rather than EDEQYR in the sibling tables because it is more comparable in concept to educational attainment as ascertained in the sibling roster. There are discrepancies in the tabulation of EDEQYR by the education of the respondent as identified by BORSIB in the sibling table, and this is to be expected. We have tabulated EDYRCM by the education of the respondent as identified by BORSIB in the sibling table, following the rule specified above, and we obtained an exact match. We also crossed BOR (which is the respondent's birth order among ever-born siblings) with BORSIB (the respondent's position among currently surviving siblings), and there were discrepancies in 10.2 percent of the cases. While the sibling section of the codebook does refer readers to Appendix S (p, 309, at col 552), this warning should be displayed more prominently in an updated version of the codebook. 1.
