APPENDIX G - COR 000b "Notes on Coding of the 1964 Follow-up Study and Recoding of Questionnaires" Written (8/17/62) Revised (9/80) LIV64: This variable indicates whether or not the student was known to be living or dead based on the parent's response to the 1964 questionnaire. When the student was dead and there was any information provided about his schooling, occupation or marital status - that information was coded. College Coding: The following guidelines were used in the coding of college variables. In general, all colleges that were mentioned by the parents in the 1964 follow-up were coded in chronological order. In the few cases where an individual attended more than three colleges, the rule was to select the schools which may have had the greatest effect upon the student. (This included the first and last or degree granting institution plus one other.) Summer school attendance was coded only if it's inclusion would not result in the loss of other data and if it was at a different institution from the place attended for the majority of one's academic work. The guidelines for coding the dates and number of years attended did not necessarily retain all of the original information. When coding dates of attendance, the first two digits represent the year in which the student first attended and the last two digits refer to the last year attended. Interruptions in schooling for any reason (work, family or military) are not reflected in the dates of attendance codes but should be reflected in the number of years attended. A chronological record of starts and stops for academic careers will only appear on the tape if the respondent attended different colleges after each interruption. A record may contain apparent inconsistencies in dates or dates that are not mutually exclusive but an examination of the records often indicates that the respondent attended a summer session at one institution while in continuous residence during the academic year at another institution. By definition, first college was to represent only undergraduate education. Although, if a respondent remained in residence at the same institution for both undergraduate and graduate education, that institution would be coded as both first and second college with inclusive dates of attendance and number of years of attendance reported for both first and second college and representing both undergraduate and graduate portions of the respondent's education. The only difference in the record for that individual between first and second college would be the variable for degree earned (i.e. first college = B.A. and second college = Master's). The codes for degrees earned at colleges attended include a separate code for a teacher's certificate which could be earned in a two-year program at a County Teacher's College and was not equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and the code for other professional degrees includes Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Vocational School Coding: The guidelines used for the coding of vocational schools were similar to those used for the coding of college variables. The information received from the parents on the vocational school careers contained more missing data on dates and degrees earned than the information on college careers.
