Change Notice #34 - data version 12.27 - April 2012

Major Additions

Wave: Graduate 2004 and Sibling 2005
Module: Summary Variables
Variables ga900re-ga918re; ca900re-ca918re
New geocode data based on 2004/2005 addresses. Two variables were archived ga021re and ca021re and have been replaced by ga914re and ca914re, respectively.

Wave: Graduate 2004 and Sibling 2005
Module: Siblings
Variables gk077ss and ck077ss
Added two new variables measuring the driving miles between the graduate and selected sibling.

Wave: Ancillary Data
Module: National Death Index Cause of Death
Variables: NDI01-NDI46, XNDI01-XNDI46
Update of cause of death information based on available NDI data as of August 2011.

Module: Status and Descriptive Variables
Variables: livgrad, deatyr, deatmn, xlivsib, xdeatyr, xdeatmn
We've updated mortality status based on Social Security Death Index search through December of 2011. In addition, six graduate cases and ten sibling cases were inadvertently coded as deceased (livgrad=2 or xlivsib=2) in release 12.26. The values in livgrad or xlivsib for these cases have been reverted back to 1 "not known to be deceased" in current release. Note that if a respondent is "not known to be deceased", it does not necessarily mean that the respondent is "alive" to date. Please use response status and interview dates to approximate the censoring date that is appropriate to your research question. The "Not ascertained" missing code for deatyr and xdeatyr were changed from -3 to -4 in current release (as we normally reserve -3 for missing due to refusal and the death information could not be obtained directly from the respondent).

Minor Corrections

Wave: Graduate 2004
Module: Sibling Module
Variables: gk071re & gk072se
One case had incorrect positions for the graduate and sibling in the roster.

Wave: Graduate 2004
Module: Children
Variable: gd01403
One case had an incorrect birthdate for a child

Wave: Graduate 2004 and Sibling 2005
Module: Children
Variables: gd01001, gd01002, gd01004, gd01005, gd01011, gd21001, gd21002, gd21004, gd21005, gd21011, cd01001, cd01002, cd01003, cd01005, cd01006, cd21001, cd21002, cd21003, cd21005, and cd21006
13 cases are affected by the corrections: 8 grad cases (10 children) and 5 sib cases (6 children).
The errors occurred because interviewers entered number of years in college or high school instead of the highest grade each child ever attended. (For example, R said that the child was in 2nd year of college or high school and the Interviewer entered 2 instead of 14 or 8).

Wave: Graduate 1957-1964
Module: 1957 Education
Variable: hsdm57
Four cases had hsdm57 (denominational control of high school) coded differently from all other respondents who attended the same schools. We checked the original questionnaire to confirm the high school names and corrected the values in hsdm57.

Wave: Graduate 2004 and Sibling 2005
Module: Siblings
Variables: gk074ss, gk057ssd, gk058sse, gk059ssf, gk060ssg, ck057ssd, ck058sse, ck059ssf, ck060ssg.
New variables measuring the distance between the graduate and the selected sibling showed that 9 more cases were co-resident. This change updates the coresidence variable and the frequency of contact variables.

Wave: Graduate 2004 and Sibling 2005
Module: Intertransfers
Variables: gq601r1, gq601r2, cq601r1, cq602r2
We discovered a programming error that assigned some relationship codes to gq601r1/cq601r1 that should have been assigned to gq601r2/cq601r2. Number of cases affected: gq601r1 = 62; gq601r2 = 65; cq601r1 = 31; cq601r2 = 35.

Wave: Graduates 1957-1964
Module: 1957 Education
Variables: inelmd, hashsd
Added new flags to indicate (1) cases sampled into the Wisconsin Elementary and Secondary School District file (inelmd) and (2) cases with valid Secondary School District data (hashsd).

Wave: Graduates 1957-1964
Module: 1957 Education
Variables hscode
Updated hscode to include respondents who were not in the Wisconsin Elementary and Secondary School District file but attended the same secondary schools as those in the School District file.
