SUMMARY AND DESCRIPTIVE VARIABLES

Updated mortality status for graduate and sibling respondents for those recently deceased according to SSA match. See LIVGRAD and XLIVGRAD in http://www.ssc.wisc.edu/wlsresearch/documentation/waves/?wave=descriptive&module=dscrMod Unknown year of birth replaced by actual year for 46 cases in BRDXDY. BRDXDY is in previous link.

GRADUATE 2004

Current marital status (GC001RE) has been updated with responses from the 467 graduates who only responded to the mail survey in 2004. GC005RE, date current marriage began: for 141 not currently married grads this variable was previously coded as date of last marriage and now it is coded inap.

GK130SSD, selected sibling's year of birth, updated with values from the SSA death match for 162 cases.

The self-report health question on the mail SAQ for those who responded to the phone instrument is (IX001RER): How would you rate your health at the present time? The potential responses are: very poor, poor, fair, good, excellent. The question on the phone instrument and on the mail SAQ for those grads who did not complete the entire phone instrument was "In general, would you say your health is excellent, very good, good, fair, or poor?" Thus those grads who responded to modified SAQ and phone answered an identical general health question and those who completed phone and mail SAQ answered a somewhat different general health question on the mail SAQ. it is clear that both the question and the scale differs. In the previous release of this data, the 467 responses for the mail only respondents were incorrectly coded in IX001RER, as if they had responded to the present health question and scale. These 467 cases are now coded -4 for IX001RER. In addition, graduates who completed a useable partial phone interview were sent the same mail SAQ as those who did not respond to the phone instrument. These 99 cases are also now coded -4 for ix001rer.

The question and scale on the mail SAQ differed depending upon response status of phone instrument.

Complete Phone,Mail SAQ Partial Useable Phone,Mail Only SAQ No Useable Phone, Mail Only SAQ
n=6279 n=99 n=467
Q1 (Phone) Q1 (Phone) Q1 (SAQ)
Q2 (SAQ) Q1 (SAQ)

In the previous release of the data, responses to the different mail surveys were treated as if they were the same and coded in IX001RER, "How would you rate your health at the present time?" with response category: very poor, poor, fair, good, excellent". 467 grads who completed the mail only SAQ are now coded -4 in IX001RER. The 99 respondents who completed useable phone and mail only SAQ are also now coded -4 for IX001RER. GX201RER now includes resonse to Q1 for all respondents with complete or useable phone interview as well as the SAQ responses for the 467 grads who completed the mail only SAQ,

Access to Care and Health Insurance: Corrections to codes for a few cases for the following variables: GS070RE, GS082REC, GS083RE, GS084RE, GS085RE, GS089RE, GS090RE, GS370RE, GS382REC, GS383RE, GS385RE, GS386RE, GS387RE, GS388RE, GS642REC, GS643RE, GS644RE, GS645RE, GS646RE, GS647RE, GS648RE, GSC70RE, GSC82REC, GSU40RE, GSUTPREC

SIBLING 2005

Current marital status (CC001RE) has been updated with responses from the 405 siblings who only responded to the mail survey in 2005. CC005RE, date current marriage began: for 127 not currently married sibs this variable was previously coded as date of last marriage and now it is inap.

CX201RE,"In general, would you say your health is excellent, very good, good, fair, or poor?" from the phone instrument now includes the 405 mail only sibling responses. On the mail only SAQ, the self-report scale and question duplicated the phone self-report question.

The self-report health question on the mail SAQ for those who responded to the phone instrument is (DX001RER): How would you rate your health at the present time? and the potential responses are: very poor, poor, fair, good, excellent. Looking back at the previous paragraph it is clear that both the question and the scale differs. In the previous release of this data, the 405 responses for the mail only respondents were incorrectly coded in DX001RER, as if they had responded to the present health question and scale. These 405 cases are now coded -4 for DX001RER.

CB103RED, years of education based upon highest degree, was mistakenly coded from the 1977 sibling report for siblings who responded in both 1994 and 1977 and who last completed highest degree in 1994. CB103RED now reflects the 1994 report for these cases who completed highest degree in 1994.

CB104RED, summary of equivalent years of regular education based on most recent degree, was mistakenly coded from the 1977 sibling report for siblings who responded in both 1994 and 1977 and who last completed a degree in 1994. CB104RED now reflects the 1994 report for these cases who last completed a degree in 1994.
