CHANGE NOTICE #23 – March 2006
Change Notice #23 – 03/06 Updated WLS Data from WLS 1957 - 1994
Various Corrections to 1957 – 1994 Data.
If you received WLS data before November 14,th 2005 please read this notice.
Summary of 03/06 Updates (see below for details):
The following changes were made to the WLS web page:
Details of the 03/06 Update
Many status variables were carried over from 1957-1977 data files to 1992 and 1994 data at the time of creating analysis variables for 1992 and 1994. Now that all data is combined into one 1957-1994 data set, variables that were duplicated in 1992-93 and 1994 data sets have been eliminated. The following table lists variables that should be used to replace deleted ones; and is also useful as a reference when searching for names of status and descriptive variables.

MAJOR CHANGES TO SELECTED SIBLING VARIABLES IN 1992-93 GRADUATE SURVEY
In 1975 one of the graduate respondent’s living siblings was randomly chosen as the selected sibling. A random sample of these selected siblings were surveyed in 1977. In the 1992-93, questions regarding the selected sibling’s family and job was asked of the graduate respondent. If the selected sibling was deceased, a mortality closeout was obtained for the selected sibling and another focal sibling was chosen from a newly obtained roster of living siblings. The variable RK066SSE was included in the 92-93 analysis file to indicate if the selected sibling questions referred to the same sibling as 1975 or a newly selected sibling.
Prior to the 2003-2005 graduate survey, it was decided to follow the selected sibling who was chosen in 1975. Investigators determined that the potential for misusing the data outweighed any benefits to be gained by following an alternate selected sibling.
In this current release of WLS data, variables RK029SSD through RK065SSD in SSIB module refer to the sibling who was selected in 1975. Only exception is if the graduate was not interviewed in 1975. In that case, a selected sibling was randomly chosen in 1992 from a roster of current living siblings.
Codes for RK029SSD through RK065SSD for cases that changed with the new release are available in a separate data file – newselsib. Newselsib save files also contain IDUSER. Cases that are in Newselsib are coded "6" for RK066SSE in the current release.
MAJOR CHANGES TO SELECTED CHILD VARIABLES IN 1992-93 GRADUATE SURVEY
In 1975, one of the graduate’s children was randomly chosen as the selected child. A few additional questions were asked about this selected child in 1975. We intended to ask additional questions about this same child in 1992-93 if that child was still living. And to randomly select another child if the 1975 selected child was deceased. The first version of the 92-93 survey instrument contained an error that resulted in random selection of a focal child. This error was present for replicates 0 and 1 (respondents are stratified into 10 replicates). Since the child chosen in 1993 was sometimes the same child as the 1975, the wrong child was asked about for a little less than half the cases in replicates 0 and 1; a total of 540 cases.
About 140 focal children chosen in 1975 were deceased by time of 1992-93 survey. Prior to the 2003-04 survey, WLS investigators decided to follow the same focal child for the entire period of the longitudinal survey. Thus reverting to the 1975 selected child for both those cases where the instrument was in error during replicates 0 & 1; and where the 1975 focal child was deceased in 1992-93. An extensive mortality closeout about focal child was included in the 2003-04 survey, thus making asking questions about a known decedent appropriate. For focal children who were living in 1992 and not asked about due to error, a few retrospective questions were included in the 2003-04 survey. These retrospective questions included: if the child was in the military, if the child was attending school, labor force status, and if working in 1992 whether that job was the same as the current job.
Prior to the current release of WLS, information about the incorrectly selected child or the child selected due to death of ’75 focal child - was coded in the selected child variables (RD002SK through RD016SK in KROS) and all of SKID variables (RJ001SK through RJ031SK). In the current release all those variables have been replaced with data about the 1975 focal child if possible; including the retrospective data from 2003-04 survey. If they could not be “filled in” from the children’s roster or from retrospective data, they were coded “not ascertained”. Previous codes for RD002SK-RD016SK and RJ001SK through RJ031SK for cases that changed with the new release have been preserved in a separate data file - newchild92. Newchild92 contains 674 and includes IDUSER so that the variables can be merged back if desired. A new variable RDB02SK was added to the current version of WLS. It is identical to RD002SK from the previous release: 4 if selected child is deceased and 5 or 7 if different selected child asked about in 1992. RD002SK indicates if the selected child in 1992-93 is the same child selected in 1975 in the current release. Some focal children were newly selected in 1992, due to noninterview in 1975, thus the variable is useful in current release.
Variables updated with retrospective data included: RJ003SK RJ019SK RJ021SK RJ032SK RJ033SK RJ034SK RJ035SK RJ036SK RJ037SK RJ038SK.

GEOGRAPHIC CODING VARIABLES ADDED FOR GRADUATE AND SIBLING 1992-1994 SURVEYS
Address of graduate and sibling respondents at time of 1992-94 surveys were sent to Geographic Data Technology (GDT) so that geocodes could be added to existing 1992-94 data.
NOTE: These variables are only available to private users and through the CHDA secure data enclave for public users. These variables are based on 1990 census codes.

RECODED 1992 EMPLOYMENT VARIABLES (REASONS FOR LEAVING JOB)
Because the open ended coding scheme changed in 2004 for the reason the respondent left his or her job four employment section variables from 1992 were recoded. Recoded variables are:
· RFU50J1D The main reason that respondent left first employer job
spell. (RF050J1D is now an archived variable)
· RFU50J2D The main reason that respondent left second employer job
spell (RF050J2D is now an archived variable)
· RFU50J3D The main reason that respondent left third employer job
spell (RF050J3D is now an archived variable)
· RFU50JCE The main reason that respondent left current/last (1992/93)
employer job spell (RF050 JCE is now an archived
variable)
These are the old and new codes and reasons for the recoded employment section
