The updated variables can be found in the following locations: 2228-2230 BMFOC1U 2231-2233 BMFOC2U 2234-2236 BMFOC3U The best measure variables were updated using the same programming logic found in COR612 except that the new best measure variables draw from OCSH57U2 instead of OCSH57U (see COR612 or Change Notice #18 for the difference between these two variables). There were 41 cases with different values on OCSH57U and OCSH57U2, however cases were different only in how they are coded as missing (ie 997 vs 998). These three cases did not have different values on previous and updated BMFOC1U-BMFOC3U variables because they are consistently coded as missing. Comparing the previous and updated BMFOC1U variable we find that 38 cases are different-as we would expect given the differences in OCSH57U and OCHS57U2. When we compare the previous and updated BMFOC2U variables we find that 7 cases are different---these changes all correspond to situations when OCSF57 (tax data) are missing and the OCSH57U2 variable is different than the OCSH57U variable. As with BMFOC1U, there were 38 cases that received an updated BMFOC3U.
COR713 contains descriptions of various errors found in 1970-basis mappings of Duncan SEI, Siegel Prestige, MSEI2, TSEI2, Occupational Education Scores, and Occupational Income Scores. Included as an attachment to this COR is the CODE used to make ALL 1970-basis mappings, including those listed above, and also the Major Occupation and Major Industry groups. 28-30 DISTRICT School district in which graduate resided in 1957. (Added 9/00) (Data not available on public release). 002 - 342 District Code 4769 5078 999 Not Available 223 247 NOTE: See Appendix MM - COR 713 for more information about this variable.
This dataset contains information regarding school staffing and spending for the school districts attended by most respondents in the WLS. Every year, officials from Wisconsin public school districts are required to supply information regarding staffing, spending and receipts to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WDPI). These data are stored on microfiche in the archives of Wisconsin State Historical Society. It is all publically available.
In 1998, Craig Olson and Deena Ackerman collected this information from the state archives and created a dataset of WDPI information for 336 of the 421 school districts in the state of Wisconsin that had students in grades nine through twelve. Data were collected for 1954-1957, the four years that the WLS respondents were in high school. Districts were excluded from the dataset based on the following criteria:
a) District had fewer than five students in the full WLS.
b) District did not provide reliable information over any of the 4 years of the survey. Many of these districts were in the process of merging with other districts. Twelve districts were excluded for this reason.
The first restriction was imposed due to the costs of data extraction.
For more information about this variable and this data module, see COR 713 which is available in the Appendices for the 9/00 release of the WLS(1957-77).
