CHANGE NOTICE #12 - 3/31/98

New Edition of Wave 2 (1992-1993) WLS Respondent data and documentation.

A new edition (DPLS edition 6) of the second wave WLS data has been released.

All of the pages for WLS: 1992/93 survey have been updated.

If you received second wave data before March 31, 1998, please read this notice.

Summary of the Wave 2 - 3/98 update (see below for details):

The SIXTH edition of the 1992/93 WLS differs from previous releases in the following ways:

  1. KROS - For one case the children's roster had to be rebuilt. During the 1992 interview the interviewer entered all six of the respondent's children in the "since 1975" roster. Five of these children had been already reported in the 1975 interview and were double-counted when the roster was built.
  2. SSIB - For one case the age of selected sibling (RK004SSC) was out of range and has been changed to a missing data code. The year of birth had been coded as 1984 but the sibling must have been born prior to the 1975 interview.
  3. PSYB - Psychological Well-Being - In releases prior to 3/98, if the respondent answered "neither agree or disagree" to an individual component of the well-being scale, it was treated as missing data along with "don't know", or refused. The updated total scores assign a mid-point to the "neither agree or disagree" response. The individual questions (RN016REC-RN027REC) have also been recoded to reflect this change and to avoid confusion in the future.
