CHANGE NOTICE #5 - 8/1/96 (rev. 3/26/97)

A new edition of the depression and alcohol variables in module HPER was prepared on 8/1/96.

If you are using the variables in the HPER module and downloaded the data before August 1996, it is suggested that you read this error report and download the updated version of HPER which is included in the 3/97 release of the FIFTH edition of the Wave 2 data.

If you use the WLS Extract program - WLSGV, you will need to use the most recent version of this program as well.

The updated versions of HPER and WLSGV are available in the 3/97 complete release of the Wave 2 data.

Corrections made to HPER module for 1992-93 primary respondents

RU004RE Some respondents had given year rather than age. These

years were converted to ages using R's year of birth.

For a small percentage of cases, this variable indicates

age at a particularly bad or most recent period of

depression. Variable RU005RE added to indicate which

                 age is reported in RU004RE.

The addition of variable RU005RE resulted in new

column locations for the remainder of the variables

in the HPER module. WLS23R.PRG has been updated

                 accordingly.

RU006RE This answer applies to age described in RU004RE - not

normally the "most" recent period of depression as

previously indicated in the description for RU006RE.

RU013RE Inappropriate description completed.

RU014RE,RU015RE Impossible combinations of length and unit were corrected.

                 is now correct.

98 was entered instead of 998 for one case.
