========================== SSCC News, November, 1996 ========================== This is the SSCC News. This monthly electronic newsletter will keep you informed about recent changes on the SSCC computer networks. We hope this information will help improve communication between the SSCC computing staff and all of you computer users out there. Inside this issue... ROBIN and IRP3 No Longer Accepting Logins Effective November 15 New Printer Available in Social Science 7413 Using RLOGIN on VMS to Avoid Key Mapping Problems on UNIX Password Cracking Software Running on UNIX Finger Working on UNIX Netscape Hangs on Digital Unix Stata Upgraded on UNIX and WinCenter WIN3, a Public SunOS Machine, Back in Service New SSCC Publications Faculty and Staff: Interested in Learning HTML? --------------------------------------------------------------- ROBIN and IRP3 No Longer Accepting Logins Effective November 15 --------------------------------------------------------------- Effective November 15, 1996, ROBIN and IRP3 will no longer accept interactive logins or batch jobs. All batch queues on ROBIN and IRP3 will be removed. SPSS ON ROBIN WILL BE MOVED TO SOC3. (Recall that SOC3 is now a public machine.) This change will make ROBIN a reliable administrative computer, performing important tasks like backing up VMS files, serving PMDF mail, serving PC files over NFS, and running the help desk's logging and tracking software. As you may recall, we set up a similar computer on UNIX called DUNCAN. The removal of IRP3's batch queues is just one more step towards the plan to remove it from the VMS cluster altogether. IRP staff will still have access to IRP3 for a while longer in order to move utility programs to other computers. When they are finished, IRP will be retired. Before November 15, you should check your LOGIN.COM and other command files for any references to ROBIN and IRP3 queues. We recommend that you use the batch queues on EAGLE instead (EAGLEBATCH, EAGLELONG, EAGLEMEDIUM, EAGLESHORT). See sscgopher for a description of EAGLE's queues. (Pick "SSCC VMS Information" and then "SSCC VMS Batch Queue Names and Limits".) To compensate for the loss of the ROBIN and IRP3 queues, we have increased the job limit on all EAGLE queues so that six jobs can execute simultaneously in each. We will increase it again if necessary. -------------------------------------------- New Printer Available in Social Science 7413 -------------------------------------------- A new self-serve laser printer is in the process of being installed in the Public Terminal Room in 7413 Social Science. You can already use this printer for printing from WinCenter or any PC on the SSCC network. By the end of next week, you will be able to use this printer to print files from UNIX and VMS as well. This printer is only capable of single sided printing and the queue name is hp7413. (VMS and UNIX postscript files may require an additional queue, hp7413_ps. This is yet to be determined.) PC users needing assistance connecting to this printer should contact Consulting. The same door access system that is installed in the terminal room in 2470 is installed in 7413. Users who are authorized for 2470 are automatically authorized for 7413 and have 24 hours/day access to this new printer. --------------------------------------------------------- Using RLOGIN on VMS to Avoid Key Mapping Problems on UNIX --------------------------------------------------------- Some users have reported that when they TELNET from VMS to UNIX (local and remotely), there are keyboard emulation problems. The most common problem has been control-x and other control key combinations not working in PINE. By using the RLOGIN command instead of TELNET, you can eliminate these problems. RLOGIN initiates an interactive login session with a remote host. Logging in to: o your own account on UNIX - there is no need to enter your user name. For instance, "rlogin norman" will log you into your UNIX account on NORMAN. o another account on UNIX - include the /USER_NAME qualifier on the RLOGIN command line. For instance, "rlogin/user=sscclass norman". After logging into UNIX, enter "setenv TERM vt100" to set your terminal to a vt100 terminal. For more information on the RLOGIN command, type HELP RLOGIN. ------------------------------------------ Password Cracking Software Running on UNIX ------------------------------------------ We now have password cracking software running on UNIX in order to provide increased system security. Passwords are our first line of defense against potential break-ins. If the software cracks your UNIX password and you have been logged on during the previous three months, you will receive e-mail asking you to change your password. If your UNIX password is cracked and you have not logged on during the previous three months, your UNIX account will be locked. To unlock an account, you need to contact Consulting and then set a new password. Refer to the section, "Choosing a Password" in your Introductory Handbook for guidelines for setting passwords. ---------------------- Finger Working on UNIX ---------------------- The Finger command is once again working on UNIX. This command allows you to look up information about a particular user or about all users currently logged in. Finger records are available since the end of June. Examples of using finger include: finger finger rrodrigu finger @ssc.wisc.edu finger president@whitehouse.gov ------------------------------ Netscape Hangs on Digital UNIX ------------------------------ Netscape sometimes hangs on Digital UNIX. When it hangs, it uses a lot of computer resources. After you exit from netscape on NORMAN, WINGRA, or ElAINE, please check to be certain that netscape is not still running. To do this, execute the command "ps". This will list all of your current processes. If one of the processes is netscape, kill the process. To do this, use the kill command. For instance: % ps PID TTY S TIME COMMAND 1639 ttypa S 0:02.43 -csh (tcsh) 1702 ttypa S 0:50.20 netscape % kill -9 1702 The number that you use after the -9 is the process id, the first number on the netscape line. This is the process you want to kill. ------------------------------------ Stata Upgraded on UNIX and WinCenter ------------------------------------ Stata has been upgraded to version 5.0 on both UNIX and WinCenter. A copy of the manuals are available for short term loan from the CDE Print Library. Memory management is slightly different in version 5.0 and SSCC Publication #7-12, "Using Stata on UNIX" has been updated to reflect this. --------------------------------------------- WIN3, a Public SunOS Machine, Back in Service --------------------------------------------- WIN3, a Sun ELC UNIX workstation similar to WALT, is back in service. WIN3 and WALT are public machines so any person with an SSCC UNIX account can log on to them. WIN3 and WALT do not have a lot of memory or /tmp space so are not intended for running large SAS or SPSS jobs. Type "soft win3" to see what software is available. --------------------- New SSCC Publications --------------------- The following new publications are available for SSCC users: Creating and Accessing Disk Shares with other PCs (#5-10) How to Inform Users Sending You E-Mail That You are Away (#19) How to Make a Web Page Publically Available through the SSCC Web Server (#43) ----------------------------------------------- Faculty and Staff: Interested in Learning HTML? ----------------------------------------------- Learning Support Services (LSS) offers an excellent (and free) hands-on workshop for faculty and staff called "HTML for Homepage Construction." The workshop usually has a waiting list making it difficult for some SSCC members to get into the class. LSS is willing to schedule a special class for SSCC if we have a minimum of six people interested. The class is three two-hour sessions. Interested faculty and staff members should contact Nancy McDermott (mcdermot). Unfortunately, LSS does not provide these classes for students.
