======================== SSCC News, March, 1996 ======================== This is the SCC News. This monthly electronic newsletter will keep you informed about recent changes on the SSCC computer networks. We hope this information will help improve communication between the SSCC computing staff and all of you computer users out there. Inside this issue... New Netscape Version SSCC Training Sessions - Spring Semester 1996 LSS Microcomputer Workshops - Spring Semester 1996 Request from Consulting -------------------- New Netscape Version -------------------- Today, we installed Netscape Version 2.0 on Digital UNIX (NORMAN, WINGRA, and ELAINE) and SunOS (CDE1S, CDE2S, WALT, etc...). The new features of this release include: - Java support. An examples of java applets is the 'Magnetic Poetry" program at: http://prominence.com/java/poetry See also: http://www.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Languages/Java/ for a list of other java applets. - The View:Document Source menu selection now has color for easier reading and debugging of source. - An improved News interface. - A new format for bookmark files allowing users to easily add folders, change order of bookmarks, and display bookmarks in a separate window. - Stricter html code checking. Warning: this may disable some improperly coded html code. Example: blah will no longer work. You must close the quote. The configuration files for the 2.0 version are different from those for the 1.12 version that you may have been using. When you start up Netscape 2.0, you will get the message: This version of Netscape uses different names for its config files than previous versions did. Those config files which still use the same file formats have been copied to their new names, and those which don't will be recreated as necessary. The old files still exist, including a disk cache directory (which might be large). Would you like us to delete the old files now? [OK] [cancel] Since we do not expect to go back to Netscape Version 1.1, you may safely select OK. All of your old unneeded Netscape files will be converted to 2.0 format and the 1.1 version deleted. Following this message, the license agreement will pop up. Read it and select ACCEPT. --------------------------------------------- SSCC Training Sessions - Spring Semester 1996 --------------------------------------------- Course descriptions can be found in SSCGOPHER.
