======================== SSCC News, February, 1996 ======================== This is the SCC News. This monthly electronic newsletter will keep you informed about recent changes on the SSCC computer networks. We hope this information will help improve communication between the SSCC computing staff and all of you computer users out there. Inside this issue... VMS Downtime All Day Saturday, February 24 SSCC Training Sessions - Spring Semester 1996 LSS Microcomputer Workshops - Spring Semester 1996 New UNIX Software Softlist for LAN Software Problem with CCing with VMS Mail Note for UNIX Users who Dial in to SSCC Modem Pool Tip for Windows Users ------------------------------------------ VMS Downtime All Day Saturday, February 24 ------------------------------------------ VMS will be down all day Saturday, February 24, in order for system staff to replace UCX TCP/IP with Multinet TCP/IP. Multinet TCP/IP is more technically advanced and robust than the UCX TCP/IP we now have. We will be able to use it for a file server for VMS hosted disks on the PC network. This is something we can't do with UCX TCP/IP. --------------------------------------------- SSCC Training Sessions - Spring Semester 1996 --------------------------------------------- Course descriptions can be found in SSCGOPHER. Note: SSCC training sessions require preregistration. If less than five people preregister for a course one week prior to its start date, the class may be canceled. To preregister for a class, send mail to SSCCLASS indicating which class(es) you plan to attend. You will be reminded about your pre- registration through e-mail a day or two before the class begins. If no training session is offered for a topic you are interested in, please send mail to SSCCLASS requesting a session. We will schedule a session if a minimum of five people request training on a topic. Preregistration is required. Just call 3-5000 or send e-mail to karen@lss.wisc.edu. Don't delay because these classes fill very quickly. Also, keep in mind that LSS WILL SCHEDULE SPECIAL SESSIONS FOR ANY CLASSES LISTED BELOW IF YOU HAVE A GROUP OF AT LEAST SIX PEOPLE INTERESTED. Course descriptions can be found at their gopher site: polyglot.lss.wisc.edu. Brochures with course descriptions are also posted on the 4th floor SSCC bulletin board. All workshops are taught in 291 Van Hise. Type "limdep7" to invoke it. A couple of serious bugs have been reported and are posted in bulletin. LISREL (version 8) and PRELIS (version 2) are now available for the first time on UNIX. They are only available on NORMAN. Type "lisrel8" or "prelis2" to invoke the software. SPSS version 6.1 has been installed on the three DEC UNIX nodes - NORMAN, ELAINE, and WINGRA. SPSS is fully supported software that is documented in SSC PUB #7-7 "Using SPSS on UNIX". Until the license expires, SPSS 4.0 will still be available on the following UNIX nodes: EUNICE, CDE1S, and CDE2S. ------------------------- Softlist for LAN Software ------------------------- We have added a -w option to softlist on both VMS and UNIX which lists software available on the PC LAN. For example: > soft -w stata STATA 4.0 | |Microsoft Windows NT |Windows 95 | We also plan to have a readme file on ssc-master which will contain more detailed information on software available. -------------------------------- Problem with CCing with VMS Mail -------------------------------- If you "CC" someone using VMS mail, and the CC-ed person reads mail on Unix, the recipient's name will appear on the "To" line and not on the "CC" line. This has resulted in problems: people incorrectly thought that messages were addressed to them, leading to confusion. The only way to prevent this from happening is to use VMS's PMDF mail -- the command is simply "email"-- instead of regular VMS mail (i.e., the "mail" command). PMDF mail was introduced in the December issue of SSCNEWS. The "old" VMS mail is no longer compliant with emerging industry standards and we encourage anyone who is still using the "old" VMS mail to switch to PMDF mail. Eventually, PMDF will be the default mailer on VMS. -------------------------------------------------- Note for UNIX Users who Dial in to SSCC Modem Pool -------------------------------------------------- UNIX users who dial in through the SSCC modem pool, connect to a VMS computer and then telnet to UNIX find that their terminals and keyboards no longer behave correctly once they are on UNIX. Control keys and terminal size definitions in particular are problematic. There are two ways around these problems: 1) Dial in through DoIt's modem pool instead and connect directly to any UNIX computer. This is your best alternative. Contact consulting and we will gladly show you how to use DoIT's modem pool with their WiscWorld software. 2) Dial in through the SSCC modem pool as you have been but connect directly to UNIX instead of VMS. Four UNIX machines have this capability: WALT (a public SunOS machine), IRP01D (IRP members only), CDE2 and CDE1S (CDE members only). From any of these UNIX machines, you can then telnet any other UNIX or VMS system, and you will not experience the terminal and keyboard problems. --------------------- Tip for Windows Users --------------------- Be sure you exit Windows before you turn off your PC. Otherwise, files that were open at the time you powered off could become corrupted.
