CONSTRUCTED VARIABLES These data files include variables that have been constructed from information in the main data file. The files include: Income Measures Eligible Children Union History Miscellaneous Education Weight Language of Interview Interview Length Interview Mode: CAPI/CATI Best Measures of Income Amounts - comparison of primary respondent and current spouse reports Including flags showing inconsistencies in household composition between main respondent and spouse/partner CONSTRUCTED INCOME MEASURES Income information in NSFH2 was collected through a series of questions in which respondents were asked: In the past twelve months did you (or anyone else in your entire household) receive income from (SOURCE)? If yes, Who received income from (SOURCE)? IDENTIFIED BY PERSON NUMBER. What was the total amount of (source) income that (you/he/she) received in the last 12 months? DOLLAR AMOUNTS WERE REQUESTED; IF RESPONDENTS RESPONDED WITH "DON'T KNOW" OR "REFUSED", A FOLLOW-UP SERIES OF QUESTIONS WAS ASKED IN AN EFFORT TO BRACKET THE AMOUNT. The income data in the main data file remain in the format in which the data were collected. In order to make the data more useful to researchers, they have been manipulated and reorganized in the following ways: 1. The income data have been put into a matrix where the rows are specific household members and the columns are types of income. 2. Incomes have been aggregated over household members and income types- for example, total family income, total earnings of R, etc. 3. Dollar amounts and range values (obtained for persons responding "DK" or "Refused" to the dollar amount question) have been combined. 4. In NSFH2 interviews were conducted with both the husbands and wives and with both cohabiting partners. All married and cohabiting respondents as well as all other householders were asked the full income question sequence. We have made an effort to use this additional information to produce better income estimates. In most cases there is great similarity in reports, but in some cases there are large discrepancies in who received income and what type and how much income it was. In some cases one partner refused or didn't know income sources or amounts, while the other did provide a report. Also, there were discrepancies in household composition reported by the partners with effects on reported income. We used all the information from both reports in order to attempt to provide "best measures" of income. 5. Some income is received jointly as opposed to individually. This is sometimes true of self-employment income, asset income, and transfer payments. In most cases it is jointly received by spouses, but sometimes by other combinations of household members. We have made an attempt to "correctly" account for incomes reported as having been jointly received. 6. Finally, a small number of income reports which we have very compelling reasons to believe were erroneous have been corrected. The most important of these is the correction of a small number of very large income amounts that we have strong reason to believe were off by a factor of ten or one-hundred as a result of interviewer error. There were also cases where the same income was evidently reported twice under different sources (primarily as both wage and salary and self-employment income) or where the income has been allocated to the wrong household member. (These changes have also been made in the main data file.) We have provided "data quality" flags for virtually all income measures in this file. These flags show whether or not (and how) the data have been modified from what the respondent reported. Refer to Appendix J for more information on the construction of these income variables. NOTE ON EXTERNAL VALIDATION In the course of developing the income measures contained in this data file we made an effort to validate the income data on an aggregate level against external sources, especially the Current Population. We discovered that in the aggregate the NSFH2 income reports tend to overstate incomes in comparison the the CPS. This appears to be primarily as a result of differential response rates between low and high income responses. Low income respondents and respondents who refused or did not know income amounts at the time of NSFH1 have lower NSFH2 response rates than relatively high income respondents. We are preparing a report on this analysis. CONSTRUCTED INCOME MEASURES FOR MAIN RESPONDENTS, CURRENT-SPOUSE/PARTNERS AND EX-SPOUSE/PARTNERS These three files have exactly the same structure, which is described in the tables below. There are three parts to these data: 1. Person-specific, source specific income amounts with corresponding data quality flags 2. Source-specific income amounts for incomes received jointly, with corresponding data quality flags 3. Income amounts aggregated over income type for individuals, couples, families, and households. PERSON-SPECIFIC, SOURCE SPECIFIC INCOME AMOUNTS: The values in this section are person-specific incomes by source. Persons are referenced by the ordinal position in the household roster. For example the third row of the table reports source-specific income values for the third-mentioned person on the household roster. (This ordinal position is the numerical suffix of the variable name.) For convenience in re-aggregating the income data, the household member number (person number) and the relationship of the person to the respondent are given in the first and second columns respectively. Note that there are 18 rows in this table. The first row contains income for the respondent who is reporting the incomes. The last row contains income of the current spouse or partner of the respondent. This row is duplicated elsewhere in the table in the ordinal row for the spouse or cohabiting partner. (The respondent's incomes are not duplicated; they are in only the first row.) The total income, aggregated over all sources, of each houshold member is in the last column of the table. JOINTLY RECEIVED INCOMES: The next section is labelled "Joint Income". These are incomes that the respondent reported were received jointly by two or more household members - e.g., jointly by the respondent and spouse, or by some other combination of household members. Social security, dividend and interest, and "other" sources of income may be jointly received by the respondent and spouse. All of the income sources may be jointly received by other combinations of household members. Income reported as jointly earned is not included in the person/source-specific income table discussed previously. AGGREGATED INCOME MEASURES: The final section in each file are aggregated income measures - for example, total family income. DATA QUALITY FLAGS A data quality flag is included for each income measure. These variables are denoted with a suffix 'fl' or 'f'. The flags have the following possible values: 0 The respondent reported a dollar value 1 The respondent did not report a dollar value; a dollar value has been estimated from a reported interval value 2 The respondent did not know or refused the income value for this source. The value is "9" when there is no person or no income from this source. In the case of aggregate variables, the flag has a value of 1 or 2 if ANY of the component incomes' flags have a value of 1 or 2. SPECIAL CODES All fields for non-existent household members are 9 - filled. That is, the person number and relationsip codes will be "99", the income fields will be "999999", etc. All variables with a reported value greater than $999,994 will have 999995 in their fields. 0001-0005 MUCASID Five digit case id number 0006 MUCASIDA Record type R Primary Respondent S 1987/88 Spouse/Partner N New Spouse/Partner CONSTRUCTED INCOME MEASURES - PERSON-SPECIFIC INCOMES BY SOURCE NOTE: DATA FOR OTHER INCOME SOURCES ARE IN RIGHT HALF OF TABLE BELOW Household Relation Self-Emp. This variables refers ONLY to the NSFH1 union. The variables in the "Union Terms Since NSFH1" section describe the respondent's union history since the NSFH1 union. The union history variables are pulled only from the R file, and so C and X files have the union history variables 9'd out.
